Rod Suggestions

Rod Suggestions - 07/14/15 03:36 AM

I fish a private lake which has a ton of dock cover and for whatever reason no matter what I throw the pattern always comes down to pitching/skipping 7 inch worms (blue fleck power worm) under the docks into the shade. I have been doing so with a Powell Inferno 704c which I use to throw all the rest of my T-rigs and I have noticed that it is pretty difficult to load up a 4 power rod with a 7 inch worm with 3/16th oz tungsten. I have decided to go ahead and buy a new rod to throw worms with, I am thinking 7' MH extra fast action if I can get it.

So my question to y'all is what rod would you choose to throw 7 inch worms within a $150 budget?

I have looked at just getting the Powell MH inferno, but I thought before I did that I would see if there's any better options out there.

Look at Trey Kistler's Magnesium's
Kistler Magnesium Rods
He's a heckuva nice guy, down in Magnolia & they make a terrific rod at any price point...
I'd prolly go for the senko worm special 7'0" med-heavy, $130 right now

I know I keep hyping Batson Rainshadow but for good reason. Problem is you would have to find someone to build the rod for you. I have built my entire arsenal on the Revelation series. You can get the blanks for under a hundred and build for under 150. They also carry more expensive lines but for my needs the Revelations are just fine.

I'd be more than happy to build you a rod in the 180-220 range depending on the blank and components you can choose yourself. But I don't mean for this post to be a huge advertisement, just trying to help you out.

I really like my 6'6 MH F Matrix for throwing light Tx Rigs and Senkos that weighs 3.1 oz and my Rainshadow RX8 6'9 M F for throwing weightless flukes and Senkos that weighs 2.4 oz. Both are incredibly sensitive, silly lightweight and have a tip capable of casting light baits very far. My 6'6 MH F Matrix is rigged up on a curado with Orange Seal Boca Bearings on 12lb Seaguar InvisX flouro and I can empty my spool with a breeze at my back throwing a 3/16 oz Tx Rig worm. Email me if you have any interests in me doing a build for you or questions about anything fishing at grueneriverrods@gmail.com

Whatever you decide to go with, I'd recommend a rod in the 6'6 to 7' range, Medium-Medium Heavy with a Fast action. I prefer skipping docks using weightless baits with a 6'9 MH F spinning rigged with a stradic ci4 and 20 lb Power Pro Super Slick 8 to a flouro leader. I put my pride to the side not using a baitcaster when I can cast a Senko or wacky worm to dry land under a 40 ft dock while on the boat. I move to one of those 2 casting rods if I move up in weight of my baits. I find the shorter rods give me better accuracy and precision in my presentations thus catching more fish.

The Falcon Bucoo's are great rods for a hundred bucks as well, very light weight and will save you a little coin if you have a budget to worry about.

Raider, I assume you're talking about a baicasting rod? If so...

Duckett Terrex 6' 8" MH

SKU:DFTX68MH-C

$149

I'd hit up Carlos Rivera in the Classifieds.

No matter which brand rod you choose, stay 7' or less. MH with fast tip.

I sound like a broken record but for the money TFO and Falcon Bucoo are hard to beat.

Abe Garcia Veritas, 7ft MH fast action will give you what you need and for sub $100. Durable, sensitive, powerful, about the only thing any other rod might do bettee is be a amudge lighter but they aren't remptelt heavy, probably lighter than your current Powell.

Go put your hands on one and check it out. Vendetta also a fnatastic rod and actually the 7ft mh fast vendetta is what I use, because I tried that line before the veritas. That rod has handled as many fish as all of my others combined, and towards the end of one of the ebst dishing days ever it went overboard and I even managed to fish ot back with a weight and treble after about 30 minutes scouring the area fan casting diligently. I love them both and have yet to find anything that improves enough to be worth it to me. I'm all about value, and if I can't perceive any more physically, I aint spending more than I need to get what I need/want.

For 200 you can bump up to a klx series, but the others are good too.

Re: Rod Suggestions - 07/31/15 07:04 AM

After fishing with my quantum smoke all day, my buddy told me to grab his Abu Garcia veritas. It felt really heavy. I personally didn't like it. I own a TFO and think it's a really good rod. You should consider that. I also owned two falcon bucoos which felt light and sensitive but mine were micros and the guides sucked. If you go with a bucoo do not go micro. Good luck on your decision.

Am I the only one who laughs his butt off every time someone ask for a suggestion for something under $XXX budget and every one of these guys posts stuff that is 30-100% more expensive than you told them you wanted your max budget to be?

Seriously... we get it. We know there are more expensive toys we pass up to buy the more affordable ones... please understand we are actively trying o justify NOT spending the extra money on the stuff... like a bunch of friggin crack dealers around here I swear! WE ARE TRYING TO TAKE IT EASY ON OUR HABIT! roflmao bang

I looks at those and did not like them as much as other rods in same price range so I bought a carbon steel and a klx that day instead. And I am a loomis guy somewhat. I have NRx's and glx's also.

I feel the kistler line up in the comparable price range feels better to me.

Plus they are a Texas company.

I feel like the quality of the Gloomis line has suffered greatly since Gary left for TFO; (ie: grade of cork has gone down, components, quality of epoxy work) you'll get more for your money without suffering quality from: TFO or Falcon.. If you're gonna spend that kinda money go with a St.Croix. They make a better mid grade rod than GLoomis.

TFO are great rods, I have several, the only draw back is that the tactical line seems to be a little loose at the reel seat. I have not noticed this on the others but just in the tacticals that I own. Great rods and dobyns are good too

The Dobyns Savvy series would be best for this IMHO 159.00 rod
They have a good line up in the 7' rod just get the power you want.
