SHE WANTS TO GO TO POSSUM KINGDOM SAT - 07/09/15 10:04 AM

The wife has asked to go to Possum Kingdom on Saturday. We have never been there and she keeps seeing pictures of how scenic it is. Of course we will bring the fishing poles. Any advice on hazards, best place to launch, local place to eat, and maybe where a big mouth might be hiding? Thanks in advance for any tips.

The bottom half of the lake is fishable. Water is nearly clear. Lotsa boat docks and salt cedars to fish.
There are only two places to stay that I know of, one is the lodge in Scenic Point and the other is a few cabins at Bonitaville. Restaurant at Bonitaville is good.
The prices are high at both places. That is one issue the lake has. That lake caters to rich folks with houses on the lake, and not fishermen like us. That's my only problem with the lake.
I think if someone would build a Fishermens lodge there, they would clean up.
The fishing is very good right now, and I would fish from 1-10' deep.
There is also a restaurant up hwy 16 near the PK airport that is good.
All of the launches are in excellent shape, and the lake has come to life, which means Skiers and jet skis.
Fish from Sandy Beach down
Good Luck, probably see you there.

Break up the day by parking at docks at The Harbor Resort and walking up to The Grill At The Harbor. Eat overlooking a beautiful view of lake. Lunch prices are not bad. Just google The Harbor and you can see location on your phone while out on lake.

Liable to be muddy again all the way down. Lots of water coming into the lake from the rains around Abilene.
Even if it is calm the lake will have 3 footers coming from every direction due to the wake boats and cruisers. Fish early and then head back in creeks to avoid them.

Check out the cabins at Bass Holllow. Nothing fancy, just the basics. Good ramp and docks. General store, gas and fast food (pizza and breakfast sandwiches ). Has always been one of our favorites. On tbe west side, not far from the state park. Motor over to Fox Hollow for some good fried catfish.

Thanks for all the tips. We are not planning to stay the night, just show up in the morning for some sight seeing and a little fishing. The fried catfish sounds good!

We launched the boat about 6 am and just drove around for a little while looking at the cliffs. We went between the two big cliffs (Hells gate) and drove around in that cove. That's where we stopped and fished, in that cove. I caught a couple of large mouth bass and a nice catfish. She caught a nice nap across the back of the boat. When the cove started filling up with party boats we left and rode around the lake some more. As was mentioned, there were constant 3 footers from all the other boats. We ate lunch at The Grill and called it a day. Visiting Possum Kingdom was something we have been wanting to do since moving to Texas 5 years ago. I'm glad we did it and appreciate the tips given. We really did enjoy the day.

Go in the spring before the weekenders get bad and you will really enjoy the lake. The fishing for largemouth and strikers is great in March and April.

Best time to fish it now is early, late or at night. When the water clears up all the way, the boat houses and docks can be great. That's where I learned to fish top water. Fishing a black jitterbug all night long. I'm to old to do that now!

9094 you are right about the ski boats, wake boats, cruisers and jet fleas causing choppy water. I am retired and fish during the week, but my wife and grandson wanted to go to PK and just look around on Saturday. I agreed to go because I thought I could check the water condition and maybe fish a little.

It was a mistake. I fished PK for years, but not in the last 10 years. I knew it would be crowded, but did not expect it to be over run with boats. We did not get there until 9:30. Most of the ramp parking was over flowing with about half of the spaces taken by cars with NO trailer.

We launched at South D & D and headed toward Hell's gate. The water had at least 3 ft. chop every where. Any direction you looked there was 20 or more boats. We would meet as many as 5 boats running abreast with jet skis running around them. Once you got past them the chop was unbelievable from all directions mixed with cruiser wakes and made for a rough ride. Went behind Hell's Gate to see 23 boats going around like mad hornets. I used to fish week ends , but never remember any lake being this crowded. It was this way from the Dam to Costello Island.

Needless to say I will not go back until cooler weather and then only during the week. I did not try to fish any, because even in the back of the coves the wakes were still rough or a cruiser would come close to check you out.

The water was muddy from Sandy Beach North. From Sandy Beach to the Dam it was very stained, but fishable.
