What Oil do you use for your Mercury?

What Oil do you use for your Mercury? - 07/08/15 05:58 PM

I tried this in the right place and no answers.
What oil do you use for your Mercury? I use a blend from where I bought the motor but not sure what make it is? If I go to a Synthetic blend do I need to use up all the oil in the tank first (reservoir) or can I just add it to what is left in it?

I was under the understanding that if you have a DFI PRoXS motor you could only run DFI oil. Am I wrong? that said, the only DFI oil I've ever seen sold is the Quicksilver.

DFI is whats recommended by merc but premium plus is also ok. If you idle alot use dfi if your always moving use prem plus. Just my opinion

I have a 2005 115 and use Pennzoil Synthetic, used it in every boat I have had with no issues.

I also have a 250 Pro XS, and originally they recommended the Premium Plus for the XS motors, not the DFI. However about 2 years ago they changed and now recommend the DFI for the XS's. I just stuck with the Premium Plus (now says synthetic blend), because it has been working all along. Why change? The bigger issue is to be sure to use a fuel additive for today's junk gas.

There are great discussions on this at the Merc. 3.0 page at BBC. Over there they said the tw0 will mix OK, but like said above, run out as much as safely possible before changing.
Hope this helps,

I've always ran Premium Plus. I have ran DFI and seen no difference in performance and the Pre+ is way less expensive. I look at it like this; GM recommends GM oil and Ford Recommends Ford Oil, etc... As long as the Oil you use, meets or exceeds manufacturers specifications it is acceptable and will not void a warranty.
