I'm hearing that the road is buckling under all the water flow. Unfortunate, as I use that route very often.

Great video!!! What kind of range do these drones have? Where is it being controlled from? I really need to get one. :-)

I have no idea, but it's definitely a drone. Nowhere in the video do I see any helicopter rotor shadows. The range on that drone is pretty amazing. Especially on the downstream shots.

Grapevine's going to take a long time to settle down.

I was lucky enough to be in the area yesterday and got to watch the person shooting this video. He was with the Grapevine Fire Department. It was taken with a large quad helicopter. It was bigger than the DJI. It was pretty neat to watch. The remote had an I-pad mini connected to it as the viewing screen and you could see remotely what the helicopter was filming. He was controling it from where the pipe gate closes the road on the norht side of the dam. Then he moved to the southside of the dam from the Grapevine side to shoot the rest of the video.

Awesome video! My DJI Phantom has about a 3000' range with a 25 min. flight time, just to give an idea of how far out there you can get them.

drones kind of snuck up on the FAA and feds quickly, but pretty sure now they have to get a clearance in that area and stay below certain altitude.

Re: Latest Lake Grapevine Spillway Video (Tues.) - 06/03/15 06:15 PM

Thanks for the info JP. What happens if you accidentally fly it out further than the 3000' range? I've wanted to get one of these but I'm scared I'll crash it the first trip out. grin

Edit: So I spent some time reading about the DJI Phantom 3. The website says it now has a distance up to 1.2 miles and will automatically return to the starting spot if it loses connectivity with the controller. It also has a learning mode to keep it within a certain distance while new pilots are figuring it out. It sounds really intuitive.

Looks like they will have to replace that big fence that ran along side of the road!

That is pretty cool video but I bet it cost us taxpayers a ton of money. The federal government has been handing grants for these things left and right and they often cost more than $250K. Here is a story of the Montgomery County drone...which they crashed into Lake Conroe.

I think drones are a worthwhile investment for municipalities. Heck, the SWAT department alone makes for a good argument to have one. Also, checking out rooftops during an uncontrolled fire, etc. probably a lot cheaper than putting a ladder truck full of firefighters next to a burning building to check things out.

Why don't you tell us how you really feel?

Seriously, I don't have a problem with drones...just ones that cost a quarter of million dollars. It is probably best that we drop the value/cost discussion because we don't want the topic to get kicked into the bunker.

Flower Mound posted this on their FB page today. Sounds like there is not an expected opening date for that road.

The Town has received a number of inquiries regarding the expected opening of Fairway Drive (commonly known as the Dam Road); and unfortunately, it will remain closed indefinitely. As the aerial footage shot yesterday (June 2) by the City of Grapevine illustrates, water continues to flow over the spillway and is expected to do so for several weeks. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will conduct controlled releases from the dam once the Trinity River system is better able to handle additional water. Once lake levels recede, crews will need to repair the extensive damage caused by the water flow over Fairway Drive. Please remember, barricades around Fairway Drive are there to keep everyone safe.
Unfortunately, drivers that utilized Fairway Drive for their commute have been forced to seek alternate routes, especially FM 2499. This has caused additional traffic backup through the DFW Connector project area. A traffic specialist, hired by Northgate Constructors, recently optimized signal timing within the construction zone; however, the additional vehicles on the roadway translate into longer drive times regardless of the signal timing.
We will continue to keep you in the loop as more information becomes available.
