Not a rant, but...

Not a rant, but... - 06/02/15 03:32 AM

how fast is too fast? I post this in the bass section because I know tourney fishermen love fast boats and I do too up to a point. I'm sitting dead in the water under a RR bridge stowing my gear, getting ready to call it a day when I look up and see a boat coming really fast. He has the whole bridge to fly under but chooses the opening right next to me. He's got to be doing 75 mph or maybe more. I've made my living turning wrenches and I'm a firm believer in Murphy's Law. Shooting a bridge like that would be a bad place to loose steering. I visited with the boat owner a little back at the ramp and he seemed like a really nice guy. His boat is a Bullet with a Merc 300hp and listening to it idle, it's not your run of the mill 300. I know everyone wants to get to their fishing hole first but at what point do you take safety out of the back seat and put it in the drivers seat? Anyway, not looking to start any controversy but rather just something to think about.

2 guys in bullets blew past me on fork one day as well. Right outside of little mustang bridge. Idiots had no idea they were running through a mine field. What is it with bullet owners???

What if it was a ski boat or just a power boat?

some guys like to go fast and show everyone how fast they can go, just hope they use a little common sense when around others and respect them, their boat and safety.

don't blame all bullet owners, i am always very respectful of others on the water.

But remember, that a fast boat running at high speed throws of alot less wake than at a fast idle.

If you ever see a red/white bullet waving you on to go by on plane that;s me, i know its less wake and disturbs my fishing less than going by at fast idle smile

that question comes up at every BASS tournament meeting. Answer is always the same.... If there is a "no wake" sign then no wake, otherwise on plane at 75mph is fine. You can go as fast as your are stupid.

I hopped in a Bullet once. It was a mistake! If I every want to go that fast on the water again Ill buy a Top Alcohol flat bottom! There was a guy in a ZX225 running the boat lane at Fork probably going 60-70 mph and we passed him so fast it scared him. I know he could see the fear in my face too!! My boat runs mid to high 60's so we had to be going in the 90's or more but it felt like about 145-150 easy lol.

yep. Used to have a Taylor SS, 18ft, with an Olds 455 (a little over 400hp) and Berkley pump. That boat was easily capable of 80mph on the water. As long as it was moderately smooth. Scary fast, BUT, is could also slow down as fast as it could accelerate and turn really well. Far safer at those speeds than a bass boat. Lol. And still insane.

Each his own. If you can drive it and want it, go for it.

Last Saturday I saw a guy on plane run the under the car bridge on Monticello. That bridge has about five no wake buoys marking it on each side. In 25 years fishing Monticello, I've never seen anyone do that.

There is a local boat where i fish on the st.lawrence called my way, its a 208 mph poker run boat.
Needless to say have had this thing fly by me a few times side ways...
Pretty scary when your standing on the front casting to a shoal...

my brother in law had a 28' racing boat that went 120 out in the ocean. Until one day he hit a rogue wave, which threw him out. Luckily for him another boat saw it happen and pulled him out unconscious. He sold the boat a month later.

His was not one of the real fast ones.

Goin 80 in a Bullet isn't exactly a great way to keep the poop in. . .lol.

If the people want it, let them have it. I will be highly upset if speed limits are brought to the water. Look up Bayou Meto Duck Boat Races. Some of them rigs will push 50mph.

I can speak to that since I have owned FIVE Bullets and TWO Allisons.

We are all a bunch of careless guys with no regard for anyone but ourselves. bang

It ain't the boat brand dude.

Bob Sandlin?? Purple Bullet???

Seen this one few times. It will fly. If he was only going 75, he was just cruising.

I personally don't have a problem with other people going scary fast, but I would prefer that they pass me a little further over than 1 slot.

If I'd been in there it would still smell like poop. I'm sure this man was a good driver and the lake conditions were optimal. He did manage a little wave to me as he blew past.

I've been in one of those Bullet boats and it was awesome fast! rockon

I looked on outta the boat and I started countin' Lake Fork Stumps, goin' by at the rate of four to the seventh power. Well I put two and two together, and added twelve and carried five; come up with twenty-two thousand Lake Fork Stumps an hour.
I looked at Ken and his eyes was wide, his lip was curled, and his leg was fried. And his hand was froze to the wheel like a tongue to a sled in the middle of a blizzard. I says, "Ken, I'm not the type to complain; but the time has come for me to explain that if you don't decrease throttle real soon, they're gonna have to pick us up with a stick and a spoon."
