Tips for driving boat though stump field to get to a spot - 05/23/15 05:15 PM

Would like some advice on easing through stumps in bass boat to get to fishing spots. I'm afraid of getting stuck Just idle and roll off em or what. Trim up? Just a little nervous

idle and roll over them, hit reverse if you get high centered.

No big deal going through stumpy areas. Avoid the obvious ones and just roll of the others. Just like any other aspects of fishing, seat time makes all the difference in the world. You can trim up if you want, but you don't have to.

If it's a mine field, bump in and out of gear to prevent high idle speeds. This will help prevent getting high-centered or doing any damage.

I trim it up a ways to allow the skeg to glance over some of them. I don't like it when I have it trimmed down and a stump dead stops the boat.

Trim up a bit and idle through. You can always tell the guys that don't trim up because they have big chunks missing out of their cavitation plate. The only thing that causes that is when the hull rolls off a stump and the boat comes down and the stump catches the cavitation plate.

Don't trim up so much that your prop starts losing bite. Just enough that the cav plate is above the bottom of the hull at an angle that won't take a direct hit if you come off one just right.

I've gone over many stumps, mostly Palestine, it's nothing to worry about, just go slow, keep you eyes on the water in front of you, avoid the obvious, you can even raise your motor and use the trolling motor if you want. Just make wide turns. If you get centered, make sure your calm so you don't freak out and make it worse. Reverse and turn away from there. If your motor gets hit and dies, just start er back up and continue on. Wear a life vest. That's all I can think of, good luck

If you have to back up make certain the path back is clear. Backing into a stump and hitting your prop would be a bummer.

Pretty much what they said and sAve the track on your depth finder. That way if you find a good path you can start using it in and out of there. Also if the lake is high most of what you'll hit is rotten. So you may not even feel it.

Absolutely trim up when idling through a stump field. Simple physics: don't you want "glancing blows" instead of "direct hits". Hand on throttle to kick it in neutral when you ride over one. On the rare occasion that you get stuck BACK off. Go slow/don't worry.
