Gotta love smallies in the north! - 05/12/15 04:38 PM

Minnesota Bass opener was this past weekend in Minnesota. For those of you that don't know Minnesota closes down bass fishing from the end of February until the first weekend in May. Here are some pics of some of the tanks we hooked into this weekend. Big fish of the weekend was caught by my buddy. It weighed in at 5lbs 14oz.

brrrrrr, long sleeves and fleece in every pic but nice fatties. What were they eating and when do they go on the beds up there?

Most fish were caught on jerkbaits and Keitech Swim Impact Fat swimbait. Yeah it wasn't the nicest weekend that's for sure. Over night temps got down to mid 30's and day temps mid 40's with rain and wind. It was kind of miserable but worth it when ya hook into a 4lber. I would guess fish will start pulling up on to beds in 2-3 weeks. Water temps were 55-58 on Saturday and then the cold front came through and by Monday morning temps dropped to 49-50.

Very big smallies. How many do you catch in a day on average?

Mille Lacs Lake, I know that spot, lived there for 15 years, sure do miss the smallies, but love the warm weather in Texas. Nice fish.

Saturday we caught around 20 and that was a slower day for this time of year. The cold front and weather that we had turned things off a little bit. I've had days on this lake in the spring (prespawn) where I have caught 50-60 fish with 75% of those being over 4lbs. Our best 5 that day went 27.5lbs. Lake Mille Lacs is definitely an underrated smallie fishery! The best part about the lake too is that little do people know but the largemouth fishing is outstanding too. It usually takes 20lbs+ to win a tourney there.

Think I'll head north about 5 minutes and get my smallie on too woot Definitely a bit fatter up there though! Would love to do a northern smallie and trout on a fly trip.
