How many of you use spinning gear for your drop-shot/finesse/weightless techniques?

Must be pretty convenient being a spinning reel guy you can just put the baits in your purse.

I grew up back east and spinning was all we used. I've tried baitcasting off and on over the
years but I've stuck with spinning and its served me well, Can't flip or pitch very well with spinning but
I don't do either of those techniques.

Most guys on her I'm sure use baitcasting for everything but finesse techniques.

I've got some MH and Heavy spinning rods that I use to drag jigs up to 1 oz and it works well. Do whatever
you feel comfortable with.

Both. I have zero issues using either one. Both are very effective when used properly depending on the circumstances. I've been thinking of buying a left handed bait caster and giving it a try because I use a spin cast and fly fish that way.

I agree. I drop shot with a spinning set up, and use both spinning and a baitcaster for a shaky head. I can cast and pitch with my spinning set up just as easily as I do with my baitcasters.

I use a Reel Time Rods spinning rod for drop shoting and a Power Tackle spinning rod for a light shaky head and a baitcaster for a heavy shaky head.

When I "power" shot, (use heavier line and larger baits) for drop shoting, I use a baitcaster.

Ok. So, I've had some REALLY great spinning gear in my days. Stella's, Steez's, with GLX rods. I wanted to like them. Hated them. Had each one for less than 2-3 weeks. I don't, for the life of me, understand WHY people would EVER want to use a spinning setup for drop shot fishing. The worst thing that effects spinning gear is line twist. Also, the worst fishing technique for CAUSING line twist is drop shotting. It's like a marriage made in HELL!! Also, the whole thing about the spinning reels being SOOOOO SLOOOOOWWW. WTH?!

So, what I do now is I use a Daiwa Pixy and a Falcon Cara medium fast baitcaster. And if the line twists...so be it. It NEVER flies off the spool. It is fast enough to actually reel in a fish before its time to go home. And it doesn't hurt my finger when casting.

Keep the spinning gear at the crappie barge.

I've seen a lot of those sissy rods taking money from you big, bad, snot blowing, power fishing cats. For shore.

I have recently started playing with the bait finesse side of things. I voted both because I used both right now. However, with my latest combo ( Jackson Super Trickster STC-64-L and a Daiwa PX-R) I may never need a spinning reel again! Love it!

Re: Spinning rig vs. bait cast rig - 05/08/15 07:12 AM

Thats hilarious that spinning reels aren't masculine enough for some of you. They are good for weightless flukes, 3'' senkos, weightless wacky rig, and of course drop shot. There are a lot of baits you can cast way, way farther on spinning gear. I don't get much line twist, probably because i manually flip the bail and don't reel up a bunch of slack. Whenever I let inexperienced people use my spinning reels they twist them up quick.

Re: Spinning rig vs. bait cast rig - 05/08/15 10:26 AM

I've used spinning gear all my life. Great for a lot of things. For most of my Texas fishing, baitcasting gear is better. I was once hybrid fishing on Lewisville, I caught about 10 of them burning a sassy shad on a heavy jig head. My buddy caught nothing cause he couldn't handle a bait caster, and his spinning gear couldn't retrieve the lure fast enough.

Re: Spinning rig vs. bait cast rig - 05/08/15 12:59 PM

Greatest advantage of a baitcaster: It's easier to present a lure quietly, more precisely, and subtly with a baitcaster. Much easier to present a lure into a small cup sized window with a baitcaster than with spinning gear. Most LMB are sniper like predators choosing only the best opportunities to strike. If you watch redfish tournaments, more than half the field is using spinning gear to fight fish that are bigger, more aggressive, and stronger than most bass. Redfish will pounce on anything that moves, thus the precision benefits of a baitcaster aren't as important.

Exactly! Anything a spinning reel can do, a Pixy can do better.

Yes but 500 bucks for a little reel like that? Ouch.

match the tool for the right job. I throw a lot of 8 lb pline on a 1000 stradic with a certain technique that out fishes most in quantity and quality.

Yep...they go right in the compartment next to the money they have won off narrow minded people in tournaments!

Re: Spinning rig vs. bait cast rig - 05/08/15 08:56 PM

I have 3 good baitcasters, 1 very good spinning real, and two spincast reels for catfishing or, yes, carp at a creek close to my house. I like them all...

I also have some old, old reels from my Dad that are 60s/70s models, like a Johnson Century. It's great!

Addendum: I do not own a purse, nor will I touch them, no matter what woman asks, or has the nerve to tell me to touch/hold it.

Addendum II: As to the original question, I do not break my fishing down into categories like finesse, drop shot, weightless, grass, bed, etc., I just fish and spend time with my Dad. I'd love to learn from some of you seasoned/pro style fishermen, but for now, just fishing in general, is a blast.
