KY Lake Trip and PVA

KY Lake Trip and PVA - 04/26/15 09:09 AM

Sorry its been a few days, but came down with the flu and haven't been up to writing this. As you all know I went to KY lake last week to fish in the PVA,( Paralyzed Veterans tournament ) a annual tournament for me; The lake was 1 ft below summer pool and they were pulling water and the bass were ins several stages of spawn depending on where you were on the lake,

On practice day Thursday, from 7 am to 10 am I made the run over to Barkly to see what the temps were, I set up in one of my old hunting grounds, found water temp 60 - 63 with fish holding on two creek channels about 12 feet deep. These were LM all in about the 3-5 lb range. Had 17.43 for 5 in about an hour. Left that areas to pursue back ups. Found the same thing over in KY Lake. The only thing I could get them to bite was a shakey head. with a 7 in Zoom Trick worm. On Friday found the same pattern working good all over KY lake but the size was smaller.

The Gentleman I drew for the weekend was fishing his first PVA Tournament and didn't have any gear, so I set him up with a spinning real and shakey head. On Saturday I don't fish, I am a Boat Cpt, net man, mentor. Instructed him on how to fish it, what to look for in bites and feel. Most on practice would just pick it up and swim off with it. He caught a lot of fish but none would make the 15 in min.
On Sunday we fish as a team, so off we went, rain pouring and the water temp had come up to 65 as we headed into a cove, went to the back of it and started throwing spinnerbaits and top waters, no takers, backed off and he picked up the shayey head and BOOM, an nice 2 1/2 lb LM. Then he caught several smaller ones and the bite just died. We picked up and went to another area where we caught a lot of fish that were 14 - 14 1/5 but couldn't that 15 in fish. Around noon we only had the one keeper when he set the hook and that SmallMouth jumped a good 2 feet out of the water. She weight 3.93 lbs. His biggest fish ever. I then get a bump, set the hook, and my heart started thumbing real heard, fought this fish for a good 5 min, turned out to be a striper that was 12 1/2 lbs. Then another bump and it was another good smallie. We ended up the day with 3 fish for 8.89 lbs. No check, but made a new friend , had fun and am looking forward to next years trip. This time I hope not come down with the flu.

Papa, I have a buddy who fishes the PVA tourneys a lot. Been to the Ray Hubbard and Caddo event many times. I work for Frito Lay and every year I get the company to sponsor and donate several hundred bags of chips for the events.

It's a good time, thanks for helping.
