Beginner question, help please?

I have a 7.0:1 ratio reel on some sort of bottom end shimano rod I think it is, what techniques or lures would you recommend to a bank fisher with that setup?

What is the length and action of the rod?

It's a 6'8 worm and jig rod. MHF if I remember right. Just wondering if I should put my 5600 back on that and find a new one for the faster retrieve reel?

It's a Shimano Sellus

I have a Shimano sellus 7' mh with a curado 200e7 I use for trig or shaky head

Tx. rig worm, senko or fluke weightless.
Possibly throw a spinner bait, top water bait,(spook, chugger or buzz bait) and a shalow crank bait.

So you think it's fine just as it sits? Use for trig worms and such? Sorry for the novice questions, I'm just starting to branch out from catfish and crappie fishing.

I began with something lesser quality than you have many years ago and it caught fish. As you use your equipment you will learn what you like best and begin to upgrade or choose equipment based on what technique you like best to fish.

Ask all the questions you want. That is what this forum is for, helping others.

Beware, if you get into bass fishing like I did be ready to let go of some $$$$, but then again I am a tackle nut.

You can get good stuff without breaking the bank. Keep asking questions on here and the answers will help you make good choices about tackle and techniques. Ask people about their favorite baits.

I totally agree with this. I bought one rod and reel in the beginning and used it for everything. Over time you learn from first hand experience and feel why one rod may be better for cranking vs tx rig. Eventually you'll end up with a few and each will have its purpose.

for ponds I like worms and spinner baits a lot because if you get in the cover they usually come out. you cant go get on top of it to shake it loose, so crank baits and other rigs that get hung easily are quick to get lost but a worm is cheap and usually does not get hung and spinner baits usually don't hang to bad either

plus that rod is good for fishing both

Back seat of my boat is normally open if you wanna come try out your tackle, welcome to try out any of mine too. I don't own much high end stuff but you could get a better idea of what different rods will do. Most of my rods and reels are around 100 new each and they fit my price point. Probably have 300-400 lbs of baits in the boat your welcome to try too.

MrWood...the rod you described will handle all your bank fishing needs, if it’s your only setup don’t try to limit it to a few techniques or you’ll end up shorting yourself... if ya only have one setup then you fish everything on that setup...regarding the 7.0:1 reel just pay attention to how your lure is acting and more importantly how the fish are reacting to your lure...if your reeling to fast and the bait is rolling on its side just slow it down, you will find the right tempo, just remember you cannot reel a lure in faster than a bass can swim – if he wants it he’ll grab it !...when I used to pond fish as a kid all I had was a 5.5 foot MH pistol grip with a Shimano Bantam 100 spooled with 14lb Stren clear/blue mono, if ya asked here on the forum what that setup would be good for today I’m sure the answer would be a tomato stake...lol...but I fished crankbaits, spinnerbaits, jigs, worms, buzzbaits, topwaters, ect., ect. on that setup and caught the fire out of ‘em !!!...those days of one rod/reel setup are long behind me but the lessons learned have stuck till today...good luck !!!

No worries on gas, I offered and will be paying the same gas if I go alone or with someone. Possibly have open back seat this weekend should know tomorrow, only thing you will need is to meet me in Sanger and bring a few drinks and snacks for the day.

KC. nothing wrong with a 5'5" medium shimano. i still have the one hank parker convinced me i needed with a shimano chronarch on it. it goes on every trip and is great in tight spots or to fire stuff under docks. can't get much distance with it but its deadly accurate.

Brad, always generous! I'll have to make it out with you one day as well. Wish I had a boat to offer up back seats to people and fish form all the time right now.... thought he pond prowler has been a seeing enough use lately that I am having a hard time selling it to invest in something bigger...

You just fishing Kiowa? I had half a mind to find someone to fish with Sunday morning since my partner is going to be busy all weekend and I want to go enjoy the fall bite on the big lakes since I have only been out on 3-600 acre lakes the past few months

On bank fishing totally agree with EZ with the exception of shallow CB and would lean more towards a fluke. Rigged weedless you can fish it either fast or slow. With a shallow crank there is the possibility of it getting hung up causing you to decide to break it off or swim out and get it back. Been there done that.

My little nephew fishes a square bill in a small pond near his house and does well with it. No timber in the pond but it does have some grass around the edges. He likes to crank so he likes it better than fishing a worm.
His spinner bait skirts melted to his tackle box so he doesn't use those. LOL
