High School Championship on Hubbard - 03/02/14 12:00 AM

Congrats to the Wills Point team captained by Warren Sprague, they took 1st with over 30 pounds and had big bass that was 9.5 pounds, I believe and it's also the new Junior Lake Record!! What an awesome day for these 2 young men.

Mike Kernan boat captained the 2nd place team, I believe it was Kaufman, and they had right at 21 pounds and Jim Gilbert boat captained his son's team from Forney to a 3rd place finish and they had just shy of 19 I believe.

Lots of fish weighed in by a lot of the young men and ladies that participated today. It as good to see them finally catch a break with all the bad conditions and get on some fish!

High school fishing is really taking off and it's neat to see these young men and ladies doing so well and learning to compete.

I'm sure someone will post the official results, I just wanted to give credit where credit is due and congratulate the winners and all that participated.

Tarponfly posted this over in sand bass forum.

High school kids did well, some. A new Jr. Record Largemouth 9.51 I think was landed. I think bass pro will give them a free replica for it. If u land a 10 lber, bass pro gives u a free replica for donating to the tanks. The team that brought in the big fish had a 30 lb sack. And they also caught a 8 lb hybrid at the dam.

Ken, you and Steve did a great job putting this on for the kids. It was a very cool weigh in scene for the kids with all their families there. Thanks to all the boat captains for supporting these kids too.

Awesome job by Ken Starling and Steve Holland. Thanks to all the guys who captained for these kids all year long. It's what grows our sport. To the parents who support their kids in this activity, you will be glad you did! Lastly, hats off to a bunch of awesome kids that stuck through it all year no matter how tough the conditions were. Hope the RHBC is involved again next year. Thanks for the opportunity!

What a great event! The weekend kicked off on Friday night with the team registration at Bass Pro in Garland. Elite Series pros Edwin Evers, Gary Klein, Takahiro Omori and Cliff Crochet all attended and gave the students a seminar and answered questions. They are all great, down to earth guys. Earlier in the day on Friday the directors made a decision to make it a one day event due to the weather looming on Sunday. There were some great sacks weighed in with the winners weighing in over 30 lbs!!!! Congratulations to the team from Wills Point on a huge sack of fish.
The event concluded with a banquet Saturday night where we recognized the top 10 teams in the AOY race and the Team of the Year (Quinlan Ford HS). We also recognized and awarded the top 10 finishers in the Regional Championship from earlier that day.

I personally look forward to making next year bigger and better for all of the students involved as myself and the other directors will be discussing the plans for the 2014-2015 season in the upcoming weeks. We have more schools planning to join as the high school fishing movement is growing by leaps and bounds.

It was my honor and privilege to serve with the other directors in order to bring such an opportunity to all of the schools and students involved. I want to personally thank all of the team advisors for giving their time and a huge THANK YOU to all of the boat captains. You have played a big role in making this a reality.

Yes, a big thanks is in order for all that helped out with this tournament. There's many fine people in the fishing community that serve in various positions to help get our kids out on the water and enjoy the sport of fishing that we all love. I also appreciate there good common sense. This morning I was talking with my son about the canceling of day two of this scheduled tournament. He was upset and thought we could have fished and it give them a good shot at winning. As I lay here in my warm bed, watching tv and typing this it's sleeting like crazy outside and it's 28*. The competitor in him would not hesitate to venture out in this stuff. Sometimes we need other people around us to protect us from ourselves. Good decision guys!
