El Salto Report - 07/01/13 10:35 PM

A couple of months ago I started a thread asking some questions about a trip to El Salto. I was looking for general information, safety and thoughts on taking my 13 year old son down with me. I received some good information from that thread so I thought I would follow up after my recent trip to El Salto.

I decided to use El Salto Lodge and the guys at BigBassFishingMexico.com for my trip. I also elected to go without my son on this trip to, as my wife said, "check it out". I booked a 3 1/2 day trip the third week of June and flew American Eagle down to Mazatlan from DFW.

The flight to/from was fine and had no issues. I did have to spend some time coming back with the AA agent to check my bag and rod case without any charges but got it done.

I had a great trip. The accommodations were more than adequate, the food was excellent and the service was outstanding. And the fishing was pretty good too.

The numbers of fish were were down according to the owner at El Salto Lodge, but size was very good. I caught 72 fish total with the largest being 11.94. 15 of the 72 fish were over 7. So 1 in 5 fish I caught were over 7 pounds. I caught 10 of the 15 big fish (7+) on swim baits. 9 of those 10 were caught in 58-70' of water with the fish suspended around 22-25'. The other big fish was caught on a point in 20' of water.

Of the other 5 7+ fish, three came on a 1/2 Santone jig pitching the tree tops in 20-25' of water, one on a 10" plastic worm on a bluff and one on a crankbait off a main lake hump.

I also caught 6 fish between 6 and 7 pounds.

It was a great trip. I highly recommend El Salto Lodge and the crew at BigBassFishingMexico.com.

Here's a pic of the 11.94

WoW. That is a beautiful fish and glad you had a great time.
When you get 10 days off you will have to jump in and go with me.
Driving is a lot of fun with no presures of airports. You just keep saying are we there yet. HA.

Hey Cap'n, glad you had a good trip. Sorry I was not able to be there at the same time. Let me know when you are going to take your son. I'll try to plan a trip then also.

Nice report, CSK. If you don't mind my asking, what brand and size swimbait? Storm weighted swimmers, Yum Money Minnows with weighted hooks? My son and I are headed down July 12-16 and looking forward to a great trip. Thanks for your help.

Fork Man,

I used 3:16 Lures 6" Mission Fish in Citrus Shad and Hitch. I think they weigh 1.46 oz. When I go back I will take the 8" Mission Fish and large hard baits as well.

I'll also note how important I believe it is to have the proper gear to fish a big swimbait and be able to handle not only the bait but a big fish.

Best of luck on your trip.
