Pretty much. Most important things are extremely sharp hooks, extra fast tip on a light, parabolic rod, and a really smooth drag.

Re: Drop shot setup - 04/08/24 11:52 PM

I used to drop shot quite a bit. I can’t stand it anymore. I don’t think I’ve caught one over about 5 or 6 pounds on it, and the average fish is about a pound. I’m not out fishing for 1 pound fish.

I like to go for the big ones.

I'm a Daiwa fan. I have the following that I use for drop-shotting.

Daiwa Procyon, 6'8" Medium Fast, PCYN681MFS, $79.99
Daiwa Tatula XT, 7'1", Medium Light Fast, TATULAXT701MLFS, $99.99
Daiwa Tatula, 7'1", Medium Light Fast, TTU711MLFS, $159.99.
Daiwa Tatuala, 7'3", Medium Fast, TTU731MXS, $159.99.

I love all 4 of them & wouldn't hesitate to re-buy them again.

I used a Procyon at Scheels Bass University. It is a very good rod for the money. The Tatulas are even better.

I use a Dobyns DX702 paired with a Shimano Stradic 2500. Use a light braided line with about a 6ft. Flouro leader of 6-8 lb. Good luck, give Berkley Live Gulp minnows a try.

Might as well buy a crappie rod & reel, you’ll catch the same size of fish.

Something like that, but our fish are straight and not 🌈 like the Cali bass.

All of my bait casters are on Power tackles…..got a rod locker full of them. Not wanting to spend that on this setup but don’t want a Walmart crappie rod either

Re: Drop shot setup - 04/09/24 03:01 AM

roflmao I thought you had one of those micro magics haha. I got suckered into buying one of those, it was a spinning rod, took it right back to academy where it came from, the guides were all wrong, it went from a big stripper guide to those teeny tiny guides way too fast, you could care it like 20 feet, and ALL the pressure was put on 1 or 2 of the guides. Junk.

Daiwa is pure gold - sorry for the confusion.

Understandable! I drop shot alot and have tried out most rods out there, but wanted to pass on the 2 that I feel are the best for me. Good luck on your search.

Re: Drop shot setup - 04/09/24 10:00 PM

Drop shot is a technique that has the bait above the weight. I have 4 different drop shot set ups, all on baitcasters. You don't need a fairy wand and 8 pound line like most will tell you. You don't need to nose hook the bait as most will tell you. All of that is just B/S. I throw a Finesse worm on one, a trick worm on another, a 7-10 inch worm on another and I punch grass with a drop shot with 65# test braid. All of them work very well.

I think people use lighter lines when the water is really clear and the fish are selective, maybe that doesn’t apply where you are?

Nope....Lake Welsh is pretty clear and they will eat a drop shot tied on with straight braid.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is the weight , almost think it's close to as important as the rod as far as efficiency goes, but we can't give away everything right.

Caught more fish and won more money on that set up than anything I’ve ever fished.

He couldn't wait for a few more replies. I guess a drop shot post just sent him over the edge. I realize that joking around can be fun. And I enjoy it to. But this thread like many others is a great example of what's wrong with this forum. There were some really helpful replies. He'll I learned a few things. Hobgood12, it's not always like this. There are some really good fisherman here that will help you. But unfortunately they are getting fewer and fewer. And of course they are going to start on me. Which is fine because others words mean nothing to me.
