Crushed by Conroe

Crushed by Conroe - 08/06/18 09:24 PM

I fished the Sunday morning tourney yesterday. We fished a lot of water. We fished shallow and deep. We cranked, jigged, c-rigged, t-rigged, rock piled, brush piled, long pointed, short pointed, rocky pointed, boat docked, hard spotted, marina(ed) and deep structured. We were rewarded with exactly zero bites for our trouble.

there were 2 20 lb sacks weighed.....I can confirm that there are at least 10 bass in the lake. I still don't know where they are.

There was at least 1 10 lb fish caught......just not by me.....

If anyone was there, feel free to post.....I am curious as to how everyone else did.

I fished about 3 hours Saturday morning and didn’t get a bite. I fished 5 hours yesterday morning and got a couple bites but didn’t put anything in the boat but I was mostly just looking for new spots. I have noticed for about the past month and a half that the bite seems to be the best starting at 11 am. I don’t like donating to those guys so I rarely fish tournaments here anymore.

My son and I fished today, caught three total but only one keeper which was about three pounds. Caught those early, didn’t get a bite after the three. All I did was get hung up in some brush then rained on the way home after I had just cleaned the boat. Typical Conroe day for us.

We fished. We ended up in second, 19+ pounds. We missed out on Big Bass, we had a 9.98 but someone else had a 10.72.. The big bass have been eating lately.

The weather is so hot, it’s hard to bite, I don’t have it so well.

I assume the big bite is offshore? I’m not asking for any spots, just wondering where people are catching them. My son caught the one keeper on a deep dock about 8:30. We fished from around 10-20 feet yesterday and didn’t get a bite after about 8:30. Started out shallow around rocks and caught two small ones. We fished one area that looks perfect but can’t catch any there. It’s on a point, old bridge with concrete pieces, has some brush on it. We’ve yet to catch one there. It’s in about 20 feet of water. Tried crank bait, Carolina rig, Texas rig 10” worm, 12” worm, jig, spoon,

I was on Conroe last Friday morning from 1 am to 8 am. Caught 6 with biggest one at 5.5 lbs. Never went south of the big bridge and stayed in two stump fields the entire time.

Actually anchored in 16ft with depths of 10 to 20ft within casting distance. Only used my TM to move a few times and then placed my electronics in stand by mode. Everything caught on plastics.

I will say I that get blanked quite often but enjoy just getting out.

yeah I think I have an idea of where to look. Then again, as much water as I eliminated, there aren't many places left to go.......

How many were keepers, over 16”? That’s our problem on Conroe. We’ve tried changing our strategy but aren’t catching many. I got sick of catching numbers but zero quality.

We have a spot where we can consistently catch one 3-4 pounder. But, it’s aleays one fish, can’t catch more than one at this spot. Drives me nuts, I keep thinking there’s got to be more than one there and usually waste too much time there. It’s about ten minutes of idling to get to it but use it as a backup if we can’t catch them anywhere else. I’m determined to get better on Conroe but it’ll just beat you down and it’s easy to hate it.

2 were 14-15" , the other 4 were all keepers, I will say I never caught more than one within 200 yards of each other. I have a similar spot where it is good for one 3-5 pounder. I have slowed down and thrown every thing in the boat in that spot, but can only get one to bite. I have been fishing Conroe for about 6 years and I had some really good stretches of bank that used to be very productive, but Harvey floated all the lay-downs on that stretch off so the last year or so has been back to the drawing board for me.

Re: Crushed by Conroe - 08/09/18 02:21 PM

Thanks, 4 keepers is good compared to what we’ve been getting. The 16” limit does make it tougher but like I tell my son it’s the same for everyone. Your spots kinda sound like ours, ruined in the last year. Our favorite area was all torn out to build a new neighborhood. It was all natural shoreline now it’s just more bulkhead. It was consistently good for 2-3 nice fish. Then, another spot up north was washed out also. We could always go there and catch a couple in a tournament. We had been fishing it for about three years but it’s not any good now.

Re: Crushed by Conroe - 08/09/18 02:30 PM

I have found that when I downsize baits out there (ie smaller hook, lighter line, 4" worm) I can get bit again... Hate that lake though.

Wow he's back!!!!! Good to see ya posting!
I know the guys that won and what depth and lures they caught them on. Just keep in mind, both winners live on the lake and one has been winning money for years on Conroe. Its tough for the casual weekend fisherman to compete. I think Mike's son and his partner are also leading the Tuesday night tournament standings. Son is a stick and fishes the collegiate events, after being a very successful high school angler. Lots of time on the water!

They should start guiding on Conroe but they’d probably make more money winning tournaments. Those boys can fish!

Re: Crushed by Conroe - 08/09/18 08:50 PM

that is exactly why conroe is such a hard lake to fish. you absolutely have to have years of experience and almost daily info to fish it successfully. On the other hand, if you hit four spots an hour and fish each spot for 10-15 minutes, which should be sufficient to figure out whether the fish are there or not, you would hit enough spots, if you had them, to find the fish........it just takes a ton of discipline and even then a ton of luck
