Ned rig around grass

Ned rig around grass - 07/18/18 05:39 PM

Hello, I'm primarily a power fisherman, but just ordered a medium light spinning outfit for throwing a ned rig. Has anyone had any luck on Rayburn or Toledo fishing a Ned Rig? I'm concerned it won't be as effective as it is elsewhere due to the amount of grass in the lake. Anyone's personal experiences fishing a Ned Rig in east Texas is welcomed!

1st I will say I have never fished with one, so take this for what its worth.

I think you will get frustrated quick trying to fish that bait in the grass. Your hook will be constantly fouled with grass on it. If you do hook a decent fish good luck getting it out of the grass with a medium light rod. I am sure you can go out on a clay point and catch all the spots you want with at and maybe catch some good ones too. It certainly wouldn't be my choice though.

You can try this weedless approach. I've been meaning to try it myself.

I have had some decent success throwing this in deeper grass on a lake around me lately. I have been tx rigging it on the jighead as opposed to having the hook exposed. You do hang grass from time/time but overall it has worked pretty good.

I've had success fishing the Ned rig in East Texas grassy lakes, particularly at the grass edges where the lake narrows/pinches in--ex: bridge areas.

You have to have a lot of patience waiting for it to get to the bottom. If you are a power fisherman, you can try a similar technique with any 1/4oz--3/8oz skirtless ball head jig and a medium rod. If around grass, use one with a small weed guard. They do make Ned rigs with a two pronged thin metal weed guard--they are OK.

I don't know Rayburn or Toledo, but looking at maps, I'd like these areas for a ned rig at the grass edge.

They do not work well in grass. It will just end up being super frustrating
