Just got back from Mille Lacs and Lake Vermilion. Both were fishing great! Lake Vermilion is really a sight to see. I would recommend staying at Pike Bay Lodge. You will love it.

Lake Mille Lacs in MN. is the place we go every year. Stay at the Beach Side Resort. Guide is Jay Brainard from the Elite Series. You cant go wrong. Beautiful country and great small mouth.

How big do the brownies get at Millie Lacs in June? We've went across the Int'l Falls border to Rainy Lake and caught 'em up to 5lbs, but average weights were 4lbers. Our experience at Traverse Bay in Lake Michigan were a little smaller on average weights, being around 3 lbs. www.northernadventuresfishing.com (Captain Chris Noffsinger) We did luck out and catch one that weighed 4lb 15oz. Our next trip will be where the big mommas hang out. Where would that be and what time of year?

If you have Verizon, you can get pretty descent phone service and data on V. Most every resort or VRBO has WiFi, its' not that "remote" up on Vermilion, beautiful lake, descent largemouth fishing as well, it really is a multi-species lake; Walleye, Pike, Muskie, Crappie, LMB, SMB...

If your coming all the way up here I would go to Vermillion, its much prettier up there and has some islands you can hide behind in the wind. On a windy day there's no place to hide on Mille Lacs.

I've been to Mille Lacs twice and stayed at Air B&B places that were great and affordable. Sturgeon Bay in Wisconsin is a good place as well. I've made 11 trips up north and can't remember a time I didn't crack 5# at least once or twice...sometimes many over 5. 6#ers are a different story, they're there but much rarer. Minnesota has so many lakes you never hear about you may want to try lake hopping. The Brainerd area has a huge amount of lakes and most people up there don't really fish for smallmouth so there are some easy pickings to be had!

Exactly right about the smaller lakes which nobody fishes for smallmouth. I go every year to Western MN and fish. There are a ton of lakes you can lake hop very easily. Have caught several over 5#. Up there if its not walleye or crappie they dont fish for it. Several lakes are managed for smallmouth. The MN state record came from West Battle Lake. Go to the MN DNR Lake finder on their website and it will tell you what each lake has as well as populations locations ect. If you decide to go pm me and ill send you some info. There are also several small lakes where you can catch alot of largemouth and good ones. My biggest up there is 6-14 but have had bigger ones blow up on topwater. good luck

I'd seriously look at Lake Simcoe , Ontario.

This 5 fish 31.8 lb sack was caught in late fall.

that is who I fished with, my friend had him booked for three days, I got to fish with him the last day, my friend caught lots of 4 lb fish and three over 5. We struggled with the wind and the clouds, but still caught 25 plus fish up to 3 and a half pounds, got into some awesome top water action late yesterday on a spook. My first trip, I will be back, next year.

Lake Vermilion is an amazing place. Absolutely beautiful and loaded with interesting fish. Was there a few weeks ago, absolutely whacked the smallmouth. No huge ones, but several up to 4 lbs. Lots of pike, but no big ones. Only one small muskie, but in years past have caught some giants. Bass fishing up there is the most fun and you can catch almost anything on any given catch. Have caught largemouth, smallmouth, pike, muskie, and walleye all while throwing bass gear. Cell signal is pretty good most areas out on the lake. On the shore usually need to hook in to wifi. For a treat go over to Burntside Lodge in Ely to eat. Been to Vermilion many times over the years, know the lake and the area well so let me know if you have questions.

Chequamegon Bay, Wisconsin is a well known smallie hotspot and is protected water off the ocean otherwise known as Lake Superior

Great part of Wisconsin too

All great locations and ideas. The ones mentioned above are probably the best known but it would take several lifetimes to hit all the great fishing opportunities in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Many lifetimes to hit all the lakes in Canada.
