Big run on BIG fish - Why?

Big run on BIG fish - Why? - 05/31/18 01:50 PM

So other than that flurry at Fork back in March, I don't recall a run on big fish being caught like have been in the last week.

Marine Creek - 13+
Fork 12+
Tawakoni 14 (pending lake record)

I know its that prime time leading up to a Full moon but any other theories out there on why all these giants were caught in such a short span?

There haven't been a lot of details on how these fish were caught other than the Marine Creek fish being on a ledge in about 20' and that the Twok fish was caught on a Gene Larew Tattle Tail in Sooner Run.

Post spawn females on the feed. Many already out deep. Much less fishing pressure than a couple months ago. Late May/early June have always been a great time for catching big females that have recuperated from the spawn.

Randy Oldfield had a 13 plus at Fork this week.

That makes sense. The late great Dean Stroman always told me he hated fishing Feb - April but thrived on May and June.

Been thinking the same thing. Went cat fishing with some friends on the 19th and decided to hit some of my favorite bass spots with C-rigs for bass before we started and my buddy caught his PB 24.25".

Also I talked to a friend who caught a 9.9 at Mineral Wells fishing a tourney, plus Pack and Livesay's customers have been catching double digits as well.

Plenty of opportunities for the weight police and the life jacket mafia to criticize and speculate

My theory is that we had one of the coldest winters in a long time. Good shad kill out deep in January. They fed up better this winter than years past.

That’s one I have not thought of! The fish are sure fat and mean right now!

I think Fork is 1 to 2 more years from busting out at the seems again with BIG fish. Caught several over 9 lbs. so far this year, and seen some real big fish brought in.

Imagine what you'd have caught if you weren't always using that fairy wand and fishing for 2.5 lbers! roflmao

Yeah, I know. I need to quite worrying about tournaments and catching numbers and just fun fish for big fish. Problem is I have a competitive wife who loves to fish for money and is damn good with a drop shot in her hands. But then again, she did learn from the best Fouz! roflmao

IDK but its definitely been happening, don't forget that caddo tourney last week that kicked out all those toads either. Guys always say Feb. March are the big fish month but for me traditionally I always catch my biggest bass of the year in May but its usually early to mid-May not late May after it gets hot like its been this year.

Re: Big run on BIG fish - Why? - 05/31/18 07:57 PM

Before 2 years ago overs were not showing up that much in the smaller tournaments at Fork. Yes Mega Bass, Legend, Skeeter, McDonalds, and Berkley all produced at least 8 up to as many as 30.
But starting 2 years while the big events were still bringing good numbers the small tournaments pretty much now also contribute. There are just a bunch of overs being weighed in everything including our club events.

The fact that a SAL size fish was caught in the daytime mid May at the Legend in addition to 18 more overs including another heavy 10 is not surprising to any of us who are on top of this subject here.

I believe the SAL and other heavy tens will really start to show up in the near future.

Bossbowman Caddo did show out. Mine was right at 10 and there was a 9.6 weighed also. Had 5-7 8s weighed I think. But it ended up being a slug fest. Tons of fish had eggs still in them also

....MAYBE ... just MAYBE .....
Athens might get back to a reasonable crowd since there are BIGGER FISH being CAUGHT ELSEWHERE.
not EVERYONE has to come to Lake Athens
FORK is fishing BIG ***** PALESTINE ****** JOE POOL ***** even TAWAKONI
all those WAKE BOATS and JET SKIs on Athens is making fishing really hard

Re: Big run on BIG fish - Why? - 06/01/18 07:51 PM

They’re getting in a predictable summer deep pattern I think.

13+ in evening weekday derby at Joe Pool two weeks ago.

9+ at Worth this week in another weekday derby.

Should be a good next few weeks everywhere with the weather hot and stable.

Whatever the reason is, it's obviously great to see happening. Just sucks I can't get on the water until next weekend.

Re: Big run on BIG fish - Why? - 06/01/18 08:48 PM

High water and tons of new cover in the water the last two to three years coming out of the drought. And possibly a shad kill during cold winter so little less to eat right now making them more susceptable to lures.

Re: Big run on BIG fish - Why? - 06/02/18 12:33 AM

I caught a couple baby SALs today, two 8.5s, love me some summer time deep fishing.

Re: Big run on BIG fish - Why? - 06/02/18 02:19 AM

Yes probably the high water gives the fish more and better places to hide in all the new flooded cover and less likely to be caught, killed and harrrased by fisherman and getting a chance to get bigger

I've seen it. We had a bunch of grass last year and those fish stayed in there and got big and fat. Now it's mostly gone and they are back to their normal hide outs
