Dont know how far north you are talking about, but fishing lake champlain was one of the greatest experiences I have ever had.
Lake Murray up by Ardmore Oklahoma is full of smallmouth.

Lake Erie, Kentucky Lake, Dale Hollow, Cumberland, Texoma is best in Texas.
Several lakes in Northwest Arkansas and southern Missouri.
My choice for a sure bet would be Dale Hollow.

Texoma, Murray (OK), Basswood Lake (Minnesota/Ontario border)

Can agree with this. Lived in Bangor, Me for about a year and a half and made another half dozen trips up there since. Got the guide and suggestions for lakes. Hundreds of lakes and not much pressure compared to Texas waters. I've never fished St Claire or any GL's waters though.

I was stationed in Maine for 15 years best fishing I have ever seen and like what was said before very little pressure.

Was at the end of Door County Wisconsin in Sept. of last year. Had to take a ferry to Washington Island. Fished with Jimmy Dorering of Catch and Catch Charters.........flat tore the Brown Bass up on spinnerbaits. Many over 5 lbs and never saw another boat!

Fall fishing for brownies is hard to beat. I always timed my return trips back to Maine for the end of September.

Belton or Stillhouse, though best smallmouth day I ever had was on Texoma on a cold overcast day in december...

This! They're easy to catch, too.
