Who Else Grew Up On Using The "H and H" Spinnerbait?

Who Else Grew Up On Using The "H and H" Spinnerbait? - 05/02/18 08:31 PM

This was virtually the only bass lure I used when growing up. Oh, I did use the Heddon Tiny Torpedo or the "red head / white body popper" occasionally, but the yellow H and H was THE lure that got this kid on the road to loving bass fishing.

I'm not that old but I must have caught every fish in my grandmas pond 20 times on an old white h&h. Kinda makes me want to dig one out and throw it around some of the dirtier water lakes around here.

I used them a ton on stock tanks in West Texas

My brother and I would save some of our lunch money every week to buy them, and Rebel cranks... Heck, they were so cheap that made them the perfect bait for a kid. cheers caught a lot of fish on them.

I grew up fishing the Bayous in Louisiana with one and still use it today when I need to
downsize to match the hatch. It was deadly a cple. of years ago when all the small fish were
schooling in Fork. It also will catch the snot out of sand bass.

I had issues with that, same as a rocket shad. I use a double split ring setup to fix that problem..
I can't tell you how many times I'd have fish smash the bait and come off, after several lost fish, I noticed the hook was gone. Errrrrrrrr double split ring came to be from that..

The individual packages were stapled to a long card (probably 6-8)!
I also used B&B spinners.
Loved purple and white.

Caught my first real good bass on a black & white one at Ray Hubbard off the Miller Road rocks. Four pounds 12 oz! I put that fish on a rope stringer and wrapped it around the handlebars on my bicycle as I rode to the little grocery store on Chiesa Road to weigh her.

I bought them at Gibsons too. I remember them being 29 cents each at one point! I think the double Colorado blade was 35 cents. clap

my favorite spinner bait when I lived in the Miss. delta back in 60's and 70's...also recall fishing with some of my wifes cousins down in the marshes of south Louisiana and catching a lot of fish on a black H&H....haven't used or seen one in years...

45 years ago OTASCO would occasionally put them on sale for 19 cents per bait. I remember my dad would buy the entire card which consisted of 8-10 baits stapled to the card. Yellow and black single blade was our favorite. When dad would buy the entire card I thought we must be the richest family in town. We caught a gazillion bass on those things. Oh the good ol days.

Used lots of H&H fishing Tanks back in South Central Oklahoma as a kid. Great Uncle had three real good tanks at his ranch around Bing Oklahoma, caught lots of fish. I bet they would still catch fish today if you threw one.

I started bass fishing at 11 years old in 1958. No boat, just walking the banks. My buddy and I used H&H spinner baits mostly, and sometimes tiny torpedos and small chuggers. We didn't know about plastic worms for quiet some time.

A push button zebco and a yellow H&H was all I needed to terrorize the local ponds when I was a boy. My grandfather would get all excited when Bacon & Edwards in Shreveport would put them on sale 10 for $1. Many a Lake Bistineau bass was caught on them. I still use them at times on cypress tree lakes...they definitely still work!

Re: Who Else Grew Up On Using The "H and H" Spinnerbait? - 05/03/18 11:39 AM

We used them in the 60's starting with Lake Mead and then when Dad retired we had them in Texas.
I can still remember a couple trips we made to Mead. Very clear water and we fished off a deep rocky point. The only bites we would get all day were from shad and an occasional catfish on live bait. Just as the sun was setting the bass would move in and we would catch a cooler full of bass on the white H&H spinner.

When I took up fishing again in the mid 70's I bought a couple cards of them but then changed to the Bomber Mini Whacker. Slightly heavier and you had to replace the bearing but I tore them up on that bait for many years.

Re: Who Else Grew Up On Using The "H and H" Spinnerbait? - 05/03/18 01:26 PM

An H&H will absolutely catch fish! They're just not durable enough. Bad hook too. I learned to bass fish with them back in the mid 70's as kid. They were deadly around the grass on Lake O'the Pines. And when they started putting willow leaf blades on em, oh man look out. Awesome bait!

Re: Who Else Grew Up On Using The "H and H" Spinnerbait? - 05/05/18 03:48 AM

I've been using them since the '50s, and still do. Now, though, I "customize" them with a ball bearing swivel, willow leaf blades, and then solder the spinner wire so I don't lose lure parts. I still catch a ton of bass on these little critters - usually yellow/black or chartreuse/blue when it's sunny and purple when it's overcast. I fish 'em in the shallows with a fast retrieve, leaving a wake but not letting the blade break through the surface. It's a killer technique during the post-spawn.

When I lived in Louisiana years ago I took a friend fishing. He didn't fish very much. I was catching them good on a H&H. I gave him one to use. He kept getting bites but would lose them. I looked at his H&H and he hadn't put the hook on it. We had a big laugh over that.

Fished Cross Lake a couple of weeks ago. Beautiful lake with great places that looked like they held bass but didn't get a single hit. Only thing we came back with were sore arms and a black/yellow frog someone had lost in the brush.

The models y'all are showing are what I'd call the "second generation" of H&H spinnerbaits.
H&H was the first spinnerbait I ever used, in about 1975.
We bought them at Walker's Sporting Goods on Jefferson in Grand Prairie back then for $1.19 each.

They had a SINGLE, fixed hook. Not the clip on, double hook pictured in some of these photos.
When they went to that hook I stopped buying them but I still have a couple from the old days.........

I caught several nice fish yesterday on a Strike King 1/8 oz. spinnerbait. Very similar to the old H&H model...

The model with the double hook was the 1st generation. I was fishing them in the mid 1960s when there were leaves on the trees in the Black Forrest on Sam Rayburn.

I started bass fishing in 1958 at age 11 in NE Texas. I fished small lakes that I could walk around and didn't get run off. For quite a while I don't think I knew there were any bass lures except the H&H, pre-rigged worm, and a Heddon popper.
