Squaw Thursday

Squaw Thursday - 01/11/18 10:16 PM

Anyone fish Squaw today(Thursday)? I drove up to the gate at 9:00am after getting off shift and the lady asked if I knew they were holding everyone in the ramp cove for the day? It was a beautiful prefrontal morning but they wanted to be proactive and keep everyone close to the ramp when the wind arrived confused. I left. No huge deal because I live five minutes away. Just wondering how many spent the day fishing in the tournament stocked ramp cove today and how they did?

LOL I figured they wouldn't let anyone leave with the front moving in early today. Im hooking up the boat for tomorrow, but calling after my Dr. appt to see if they are holding people.

I went last Thursday and there were 24 people registered. I imagine there were far less than that today.

Same here. Friday or Saturday aren't looking good. But I'm gonna try tomorrow.

I’ve never been to Squaw but plan to next week on Wednesday if temps come up a little. What are you guys referring to with “holding people”? They not allowed to leave certain areas?

Park is always closed monday-wednesday. Yes they won't let boats out of the buoys in certain conditions, fog and I guess wind too.

I-fish, the lake is closed on Wednesday, you have to go online to Squaw Creek Reservation to make a reservation to fish , they only allow 150 boats and check each boat in and out for the day, for security reasons. The fee is $30 cash and the gates open around 630am. If there is fog which can happen in cold temperatures with the warm power plant water, or other weather issues they will not let you leave the launch cove (past the buoys) until they determine you can leave and return safely. These changes were made after 9/11 to reopen the lake for fishing, you have to leave the by 4pm unless instructed otherwise by the staff when entering.

Squaw Creek is not open on Wednesday. Go here to make a reservation: https://www.luminant.com/squaw-creek-park/reservations/ What is meant by “holding the boaters in the ramp cove” is during heavy fog they often allow people to unload their boats and even fish if they want but they require them to stay within the buoyed confines of the large cove that contains the loading ramp. They will blow an air horn notifying the boaters when it is OK for them to take off and leave the cove. Because of the cold air and hot water combined with humidity levels often the weather conditions will result in heavy fog and the park managers want to keep it safe. Ocassionally they will deem it to dangerous to allow people out because of an approaching front. That’s what happened yesterday and the lady at the gate told me they decided everyone would be held in the ramp cove for the entire day. I have definitely been on the lake in worse conditions then yesterday’s frontal passage but they mean well and just trying to protect people against themselves :-).

They let everyone go. Fishing sucks. Go fish Fairfield and catch 25 lbs flipping reeds.
