Comedero with Speed Jr.

Considering booking a trip with Speed Jr. for a run at Comedero. Went to Salto four years ago and we packed our own sticks but it was a HUGE pain and I know it won't be any easier or less expensive this time around, so we are looking to avoid that scenario this time around. The folks at Speed's advertise they provide both Temple Fork and Dobyns rods at no additional charge. Sounds good to me, but I'm wondering if anyone has been there recently and can tell me about the rod selection.

Mike...thank you...did they provide rods suitable for throwing 10X crank baits and swimbaits?

can't speak for comerdero but they had plenty of rods to choose from at picachos and el salto....

This. The Dobyns rods are the Fury series and good rods for horsing pigs out of the brush. IMO, no need to bring your own.

Thank you...I own more than a dozen Dobyns rods and I love em. I don't have any of the Fury series but I have no concerns about using them. I'm just trying to verify from recent clients that there will be a full array of sticks when we get there.

i just returned ths week, i took my own rods and had a ceramic insert in the tip guide broken by TSA. There were about 20 poeple at the camp and they were out of MH rods. I borrowed a heavy action rod and it was in in good shape.

The camp holds a total of 16 fisherman and there should be enough rods for each fisherman to have 3 to 4 rods. No need to have 5 or 6 rods as the guide can tie on anything you like while your using the other rod. Two rods is all you really need. But, some guys think they need a bunch of rods. Since all the rods are heavy's, I'm not sure why some think they need so many.

I should be more specific with my question...

I went to El Salto four years ago and packed my own rods. I took a flipping stick...a rod for throwing lipless, spinnerbaits and top water baits...one for 10X-type crankbaits and large spinnerbaits, chatterbaits...a Dobyns SB 795 for throwing a myriad of medium-sized swimbaits...and a stick for dragging lizards, worms and senkos.

So, is it unrealistic for me to think they will provide rods that will allow me to effectively throw those types of baits?

I understand, if need be, I can/will combine some of those categories, but I don't own two rods that I would expect to cover all of those presentation types and I really don't want to spend four days just dragging plastic and throwing senkos.

completely agree Steve...you don't need half the stuff you are taking! Bring more watermelon red 8" lizards than you think you need is all I can say...they friggin love those things - two bottles of chart dip - Bring extra line...if you are fishing the timber right you will get wrapped up a few times - 2 days of fishing will wear a spool of line out for sure.

I would take 4 rods max - Mag Fluke, Mag Lizzards, Senkos and a few topwater baits and crank baits - at the end of the day I am in heaven if I can throw a 3/8 oz t-rig with a thump on the end every cast! HOOK SET!!!! I can not wait to go again.

On our trip to Salto we caught a bunch of solid fish dragging lizards and pitching senkos. I've got no problem with that but six of our seven biggest fish came on swimbaits(4) and crankbaits(2). Before I booked our trip I was promised that would have a guide that understood swimbaits and plenty of opportunity to throw them. The reality was a guide who looked at us every session and said, "Iguana" four days in a row. Yes, we caught plenty of 3, 4 and even a 6 pounder dragging those lizards but that's not how I prefer to fish and I was looking for more choices. When we insisted on throwing swimbaits and large crankbaits we caught fewer fish but discernibly larger fish. I'm sure we'll spend some time catching fish dragging lizards and throwing flukes and senkos at Comedero. I'm just trying to make sure when I get there they have rods other than 6'6" and 7' MH and H worm/jig rods. If that's the situation, I want to know beforehand so I can make a decision on bringing my own sticks...something I would like to avoid.

You may want to call Speed's and verify, but I think your choice will be 6.5 to 7 foot heavy rods. Perhaps a few med heavy's and perhaps a few mag heavy rods. I'm taking 2 big groups to Comedero this year and only a few will bring rods, but I certainly understand if you prefer to bring your own. Just wrap the tips in your carrier and you should be fine.
