What’s everyone’s preference for the small yellow Magic’s? Looking to buy a new rod for them

Economical solution: Dobyns medium action 703sf (spinning rod)

Love it with yellow magics!

6'3" Med action Vendetta spinning rod. Seems to be perfect for me to throw the yellow magic with around trees and other cover. I also use it for the 1.0 size cranks and shaky head and wacky worm with it. Fill it up with braid and go!

Re: Yellow magic rod - 11/09/17 03:33 PM

Two rods I have that work really well is a Dobyns Champion 733 and a Falcon Lowrider in the Weightless Worm model. The Dobyns is 7'3" and the Falcon is 6'7". Both are light enough with a fast enough tip to throw the small 1/4oz YM well but still enough guts to handle a good bass. If I was purchasing a brand new rod with throwing a smaller YM specifically in mind I would look seriously at the Dobyns Fury FR 703 SF. A real nice 7' Dobyns in a lighter action for $110 retail.

For the small 1/4 ounce yellow magic I like a medium action spinning rod with braid to a short mono leader. You can get way more distance and accuracy out of your cast with this set up

That was the BEST rod ever made for a YM and Pop-R. Zell Rowland worked with Morgan McCain to design it when Morgan owned Allstar. thumb

I have an older (6 or 7 years maybe) All Star jerk bait rod that works perfectly on my yellow magic. I know its not a high end rod (it was the expensive version in its day) but it works so well that I haven't felt the need to change.

I use a LEWS custom lite speed stick in the mag heavy, works really well for me and the way I fish.
