Go to Tom Thumb. You can buy El Fenix's restaurants not sauce in the jar. It's on the Mexican spices isle. It's better than everything listed so far and it's a little bit more spicy than the restaurant version of I just go to my local favorite Mexican restaraunt and get it to go

Pace - The best is homemade but my wife seems to have gotten out of the mood to make it. So Pace is what is always in the frig.

Glad to know Tom Thumb sells it. Best Mexican chain restaurant salsa.

Thanks

Pace* Fire its not any hotter then the regular "hot"
For a retail offering it is pretty dang tasty for less then 2 bucks a jar.
I can only find it @ Walmart so far
Chipotle/Jalapeno is much better then the Mango/Habanero

I agree, El Fenix beats most anything else out there. Another good one you might try is La Fagota Roasted Hot sauce at HEB. It has a slightly smoky flavor and a nice little kick to it without being too hot.

Re: Store bought picante sauce - 12/09/13 11:48 PM

Awesome. I always think it's better to let it sit for a day before eating so I make several jars at once. Also; try heating it up to a simmer then cooling before putting that lid on, lots of variations.

Screaming Sphincter made in Amarillo may not be the best, but I love the name.

Re: Store bought picante sauce - 12/13/13 04:19 PM

I like pace and add a good squirt of siracha sauce to make it a little spicy, also the pace restraint style original is good but a little watery.

Re: Store bought picante sauce - 01/01/14 04:05 AM

Old ElPasso thick and chunky mild, med, or hot is the best store bought ever. Only homemade will beat it. Im my opinion.

Re: Store bought picante sauce - 01/01/14 04:08 AM

IN my opinion.

Iv'e ate the Pace for so long it does get old, I've tried the El Pheonix - it's OK, I do like Herdez and Alberts, and I do make some good homemade sauce when I've got fresh tomatoes.

Kylitos Roasted is indeed pretty tasty stuff, adding some roasted Hatch chili's would make it even better
The habanero is an over used heat source and their sauce reflects it.(average hab sauce)

Re: Store bought picante sauce - 02/28/14 04:17 AM

Sriracha is my main go to sauce. Gawd I love that stuff.
El Fenix is for sure one of the best store bought sauces out there.
For the best in Texas stop by Hildas out on Tivydale road by the airport in Fredericksburg for some breakfast tacos and pick up a few quarts of their regular and Verde sauce. It's truly the best I've ever had. But get there early for the breakfast tacos cause she sells out every morning.
