Cost to add trailer brakes

I was just told by an inspection station that all trailers over 4500 pound gvwr need brakes to pass inspection. My trailer is for a bay boat at the coast. Because of the rust issues many/most of the trailers down there for 21-24' boats do not have brakes.

Does anyone have an idea what it costs to add brakes? I'm guessing it will be ridiculously expensive.

take the trailer/boat to a weigh station and weigh it. if you are under 4500 lb, you can reregister your trailer to a lower weight and not have to get it inspected. mine is a 2200 pathfinder and weighs 3600 lb trailer and all. i reregistered to trailer weight of 1000 and capacity of 3000 for a total of 4000. 500 lb below the inspection/brake limit. this is not a new law, but they just started enforcing it. good luck at the scales.

Check with Southwest Wheel in Dallas, they are the least expensive I have found for the parts, but I don't believe they install.

If you were in Dallas area I would say Mcgills trailer shop in Lewisville for the complete job.

Probably cheaper to just put a new brake axle under it. Rebuilding electric brakes often costs way more in time and labor than just replacing it. We can usually buy 3500 lb axle for around $200-$250.
