Extended warranty - 11/25/15 06:01 AM

I have 2 years of warranty left on my motor. How much do extended warranties cost for a yamaha who? Are they worth the cost?

They are sure a lot cheaper than a rebuild

Price of YES coverage based on motor size. What size Yammy do you have?

Sorry to revive this but couldn't resist.

The way actuaries determine what to charge for extended warranties is to determine how much in repair costs thousands of units needed (on average) then add 50% or so to the cost of the warranty. These are virtually never cost effective.

They are cost effective if you ever have a powerhead failure.

Yamaha just sent me the paper work for my extended warranty, $500 a yr for my F70.

Anyone know of any other options than Yamaha? I would hate to make a decision without shopping options.

Tommy, is there anyone else in the extended warranty business you've dealt with? Just curious what you experience might offer since you see how good or bad they treat people on claims?

Sure they are. But if that was likely to happen within the warranty period they would charge you way more. Extended warranties are basically Lottery tickets. Damned unlikely to save you any money.

A recent Consumer Reports survey found that 55 percent of owners who purchased an extended warranty hadn’t used it for repairs during the lifetime of the policy, even though the median price paid for the coverage was just over $1,200. And, on average, those who did use it spent hundreds more for the coverage than they saved in repair costs.

for those that say it is a bad investment try to sell a opti or a hpdi motor without an see what the difference in the sale price is.

The only other company I would consider is FPC, ( First Protection Corp. ), they were the first to enter the marine extended service business many years ago.

That said you can't beat the factory supported extended warranty programs.

IMO it is better to have one and never need it than not have one and need it.
