Sounds like you need to have someone go with you to show you the ropes. The lever is your drive/throttle. Forward is forward, neutral is neutral and back is reverse. Where are you located? Maybe someone on here can meet you at the lake to help you out. Good luck, be safe and take your time learning your boat.

It would be a great idea to take a friend that has more experience operating boats on your first time out.

The boat can only be started in the middle/neutral position.

There is a disengage button or lever that will allow you to rev the engine without rotating the prop in order to warm up the engine.

After going back into neutral, most units will automatically go back into ready position to engage the prop.

The is a small area both forward and behind neutral before the prop is engaged. From neutral move the lever forward smoothly until you hear and feel the "clunk" that lets you know you are in gear. The same thing occurs moving the handle backwards into reverse.

Never throw the handle from forward to reverse or reverse to forward quickly. Always give it a second in neutral to stop the engine movement so you don't tear it up. Using too much reverse can submerge the back end of the boat with water flooding the bilge depending on your boats design and the ability of the bilge pumps to empty it.

Good luck and be safe!

Make sure to brush up on rules and regs before heading out! Here is a link to some boating safety info: http://www.boatus.org/onlinecourse/Texas.asp

Watch some youtube videos on making sure you operate it in accordance to the law so you don't end up with a big fat ticket for something you didnt know. Theres alot more to safe boat handling than knowing how the throttle works. Be safe and have fun!
