Anyone Johnson VRO knowledgeable?

I know 90% of the world has removed, or bypassed the system, however Was hoping someone would know how the screen/valve works that sits directly above the the gas intake line.

My issue is when I prime the system, fuel is coming out of that screen. Hoping it’s something that can be fixed without replacing the pump as it still is running great.

I spent a year or 2 trying and buying parts for a 115 jhonson fast strike.
I did the repair and have had 5 or6 no prob years.
