Micro Fly Rod - 02/05/15 01:59 AM

Been tinkering with ultralight fly rods and Micro Fishing. Made one Micro Fly Rod using a Pen Fishing Rod and a Crappie Jigging Reel. It worked! Then, decided to tinker around some more... ended up buying another Pen Fishing Rod that came with a Mini-Fly Reel. After a few more mods, came up with Micro Fly Rod II... Fun stuff! May be of interest to some!

Started out fishing a five weight yesterday for Bass, did well but then decided to fish a COAF Griffith's Gnat in the Canal for little fishes. After a while, switched to the COAF Micro Fly Rod. Lotta fun catching them on ultralight gear; like that it fits in the fly vest rain gear pocket! Yesterdays' Video.

Been a tough week to go fishing but made a quick trip after working out this morning. Used the Micro Fly Rod and a Foam Grasshopper in Size 14 to catch little Sunfish and Bluegill. Overall had a fun time, sure beats working! Really liking the Micro Fly Rod concept, too! Today's Video

Re: Micro Fly Rod - 07/11/15 05:29 AM

No Bruisers other than a nice sized Sunfish; no worries though, they all put up a good fight on the Micro Fly Rod!

Cannot recall how many fish were caught and released but over 20 would be a good "guestimate". Today's Video.

Micro Fly Rod Fishing this evening. Bite was good on little Bass and Bluegill. Foam Grasshopper in Size 16 worked well, but ended up losing the fishing fly to a "Tree Fish"!

Fished this evening for about an hour. Noticed the water level was much lower compared to two months ago in the local pond. Luckily, the fish were biting. They were little... perfect for the Micro Fly Rod and some Micro Fishing!

Fun time this evening catching Bluegill, Sunfish, and Bass on the two-piece Micro Fly Rod. Started with a Foam Grasshopper but then switched to a Tenkara Fly. No Bruisers save for a run on some nice size Bluegill that were making a nice bend in the little fly rod. Sure glad to have made use of that broken 8-Wt to make this rod. Fun stuff! Yesterday's Video.

Re: Micro Fly Rod - 09/03/17 12:53 AM

Fun with the micro fly rod we made years back. This one was the telescoping one that collapses to a length that fits in the backpack that your's truly uses for work. Good for those times when "fishy" waters are nearby while out during the work week! Video Post.

Telescoping Micro Fly Rod modified with larger rod guides... fun stuff for quick trips to the local pond! Micro Fly Rod.

Re: Micro Fly Rod - 08/10/18 04:07 AM

While on the way home from the day job, had the fishing bug strike. Luckily we keep a Micro Fly Rod in our backpack at the ready for these instances.Video shows the Micro Fly Rod variant that we made that collapses and has larger rod guides than the original ones that came from the manufacturer. Micro Fly Rod casts 30' without an issue; only need to adjust the timing of the forward and backcast and we tend to use a sidecast more often than not.

Re: Micro Fly Rod - 05/05/19 07:15 PM

Went kayak fishing yesterday on the local lake. Caught five Catfish using Shad on Juglines. Filleted them and cooked them blackened fish style. Tasty meal but still got a ways to go before the video is done; will get it posted soon as we can....

For now, did a quick trip with the Telescoping Micro Fly Rod trying to catch a small fish on a size 32 fly. Bluegill took it, switched to a size 18 Griffiths Gnat and caught a Sunfish. Fun times, especially with a rod that fits conveniently in a pocket. Do stay tuned for more on yesterday's kayak fishing video!

That micro fly rod is pretty cool.
Good job on the catfish on jugs. I was planning on doing that but never got beyond catching white bass.
Thanks for the video.

Alrighty, getting questions about the micro fly rods we use as well as another Near Deere Give Away! This round we show four Micro Fly Rods. And then, we end with a Near Deere Give Away. This give away is for three Near Deere - Olive, White, and Pink! Blog Post

Pond Fishing with the

Micro Fly Rod #microflyfishing #flyfishing

Sidetracked this past Sunday from fishing. Go figure - needed to fix a lawn sprinkler that broke, then had to fix two more that were leaking. Before starting this honey do, made a quick run to Lavon for a chance at White Bass on the point at Brockdale Park. Struck out but had a blast catching sunfish and bluegill later that day. The micro fly rod did well... forgot how fun it is!

PS: Long video... mentioned some adjustments made to the line strike indicator, diy leader/tipper setup, and added a demo snippet of the rod casting easily 12 yards despite the shortness of the rod... aka top two sections of a broken 8wt we repurposed as a micro fly rod!

Redington Practice Fly Rod aka Micro Fly Rod #flyfishing

A tip from a YouTube Viewer on using the Orvis Practicaster Fly Rod as a Micro Fly Rod! Ordered it and Redington's version of one... the Orvis one is still in the mail but Redington's arrived.

Liking the Rio Fly Line that came with it. Really thick line... planned to use a Micro Fly Reel but needed a larger reel. Put an old Martin Fly Reel on the rod. Works awesome.

Here is a demo... hope to try it out fishing later this week! Do check back!

Re: Micro Fly Rod - 06/18/20 07:40 PM

Really liking this combo... aka micro fly rod that uses Redington's Practice Fly Rod and the Rio Fly Line that comes with it.

Added a diy leader made with the following recipe... 8" of 50lbs mono, 18" of 14lbs mono, and 18" of 4lbs mono.

Leader casts a tandem rigged Foam Spider and Scud with ease. Fly rod is about 4ft in length.

Casting a Micro Fly Rod Demo #microflyrod #microflyfishing

Here is the follow up video we mentioned on one of our earlier iFishNews Fishing Podcast and YouTube video about Micro Fly Rods.

This video shows five micro flyrods - three are ones we made and have a micro flyreel mounted on them, and two are practice fly rods from Redington and Orvis with a flyreel zip tied to the handle.

We marked 25 feet as a reference, and then cast the rods to show the 25 feet distance is readily attained.

There was a strong crosswind and one of the rods had less than 25 feet of line but overall all rods could easily cast 25 feet.

That said, based on time fishing with them, there are several that can cast well past 25 feet.

Fun stuff...

Micro Fly Rod Fishing | Two Piece Micro Fly Rod Quick Trip

Was out this morning and had saw a chance to fish the feeder creek at the local pond. Good thing I keep the Micro Fly Rod handy... this one is the two piece micro fly rod made from a broken 8wt fly rod.

Saw a nice bass in the culvert that runs from the feeder creek to the pond. Also, saw several smaller bass but none wanted to bite. Did lose a couple of Bluegill and land one Bluegill that went for the Guadalupana.

Did call it quits... too cold, but just in time to miss the snow that came in shortly after!
