Best reel for around 160.00 - 12/09/12 04:16 AM

Looking for opinions on bait casting reels. I have revos, but would like to try something different. Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks.

If you're talking bait casters IMO Shimano Chronarch is beast for the $, Try: http://www.sportsmansoutfitters.com They don't have the chronarch listed but if you call they will order them for you @ $180 per reel. I haven't tried the quantums's, revos, or new lews. I have always stuck with shimanos because they're Japan made reels are tough to beat, the Malaysia builds I stay away from. Plus Shimano's are the easiest to have work done on, upgraded, cleaning etc.

Oh.....even though I'm pro Shimano the G series Curado's are $&@!. Ordered 3 of them and retuned them all. One had a bad bearing , one had a loose spool and the other just because it said "Made in Malaysia" on the bottom of the box.

^ agreed 100% new curado isn't good at all i own one and very disapointed, chronarch is the way to go.

in the 130 price range i would personally recommend a Abu Garcia Revo S, i own a bunch of them and have never had a problem all metal body and parts! great real for the range you are looking for!

Try the Lews you probably wont ever buy anything else I was a Shimano guy and still have all e series but the new g series is junk plus I ain't going to pay 200 bucks for a reel that used to cost 150.

If you can find one, get a Chronarch MG off of eBay.

The new Lew's BB1 is $159 retail and is a very good reel. The Tournament is $149 and the tournament mg for $129 are solid as well. But the tournament pro is the best reel I have used. $199 retail but can be found new on eBay for under $160.

I absolutely LOVE my Ambassadeur Pro Rockets and older C3's and C4's! And my Curados and Calcuttas. I use old school Penn No.9s and 209s almost exclusively for bank fishing. The Abu's, Curados, and Calcuttas are for wade and boat fishing.

Revo SX (as far as full retail) gen 3 IMO. It's everything the 2010 premier was without the foam handle and cent. brake part of the dual control.

If you have revo and want something else go with shimano , those are about the only two i throw

Daiwa's lexa 100 series seems like a good reel for 139.99 and the team daiwa advantage is a tank for 169.99 if you can find them.

I love my old Shimano Curado E's and when they changed to the newer ones I went to Lew's.

Now that Shimano has reapplied their quality and craftsmanship in the Curado K series I have bought 3 of them and they are top of the line again. woot

Lew’s are very nice reels for the money. I think they have some good closeout models on Tacklewarehouse right now. You can also score an Abu Revo STX on sale for around that price point, maybe a hair less.

Academy has the revo alx in the 6.4 gears on sale right now for 139, seen mixed reviews but may be worth a try. Also, I own all different brands from metanium mgl to core 100mg and I picked up a fuego ct for 69.99 in the 7.3 gear ratio. I have had absolutely ZERO issues with it and it will straight up bomb a spro bronzeye frog, made a few casts with it that went 50+ yards. Not sure if they will all do that or if I just got a good one but for the price I paid, there’s a reason why it stays on my frog rod....

I used STXs for quite a while but hate the gen4 STX. Went to a Lew's Tournament Pro G (on clearance from Tacklewarehouse for $140 or so) and won't buy an Abu again. Awesome reel, fits great in the hand, smooth.

Academy in Longview has the Concept Z on sale for 159.95 right now. I have several Concept A’s that I really like and one Concept Z that is freaking awesome

My collection is narrowed down to both the Concept A's and Daiwa Tatula SV TW's. Have to say I personally give the Concept A's the edge. To me they just feel right in my hand and have given me ZERO issues over the couple of years that I've owned them. My SV TW's are prettty nice as well but one thing that bugs me is the way I sometimes hold them the magnetic break knob gets turned up. Probably should put a piece of tape over them and that would solve the problem. Either way both can be found on Ebay for under $160 from reputable sellers.

You can’t beat a 13 fishing reel.

Wow no Daiwa love here I guess lol. You really can't go wrong with the Tatula SV series these days for a mid level budget reel... I've said before I have about 15 Steez's and tuned up TD-Z's and the like, but if I had to start all over again I would probably grab a few Tatula CT SV's for pitching/soft plastics and the Tat CT or Tat 100/150/200 for casting baits depending on line capacity desired, and call it a day.
