Spinning Reel with Fluoro , Bad Line Twist

I have an Abu Revo SX Spinning reel that I use for drop shot, it has 12# fluoro on it right now. I was locked on a point the other day and making cast's about 20 yards out and doing real slow retrieval . After the 10th cast or so, the line twist was so bad, it knotted itself up and I had to cut a good portion of line off the spool and re tie.

Is this just the nature of the beast with this kind of setup, or is my casting the drop shot away from the boat causing it as opposed to just dropping the bait straight down beside the boat?

If it helps, I do have the drop shot hooks with the built in swivels to help prevent some of the line twist.

If you have any tips or tricks to help avoid what happened to me the other day, I would love to hear any feedback.

all my spinning reels are spooled with braid, I got tired of the 'twist' fight years ago.
I'll use 10-30 pound Power Pro depending on the usage, even 50 pound sometimes in spring when throwing frogs over pads.
For drop shots, I like 20 pound braid with 8-10 pound trilene mono. I'll use about a 8 -10 foot leader, tied on with a double uni-knot. Really makes it much easier. JIM

ALY, I agree with JIM that braid is just so much better. As a second choice, I'd go to some of the more modern monofilament. Fluorocarbon misbehaves badly after it twists up a bit.

Could I make a presentation suggestion, this using braid to a 6 or so feet long fluorocarbon leader? When you reel in the line, leave it out long enough so that the drop sinker at the very termination of your line is dangling about equal to your rod butt end or a bit shorter. Just grab the sinker, drop your rid tip low and make a long pitching motion. It is, in effect, a cast made from down low instead of slung from above your head.

Drop shots are not normally long distance presentations but I have made them all the way to the centers of ponds, what, I suppose 120 feet or so.

Too, with that pitching style, the rig won't tumble as much through the air.

Number one way to prevent line from twisting is to pick a real good swivel.
As about mono lines, majority of them are not good for spinning.
In fact, just few are OK
- Berkley Trilene XL (eXtra Limp)
- Berkley Solution Mono "Spinning"
AND
P-line Floroclear is the closest pick with fluoro effect because it is limp enough.

Now I have this hope that Berkley NanoFil will do it for me(?)

Braid.
Short leader. (I like the FG knot, but I admit it's hard to learn.)
Close the bail by hand. (That's the most noticable change.)
If you insist on sticking with flouro, go lighter than 10lb. The thicker stuff is too stiff.

After a cast, always close the bail by hand. Training yourself to do this will reduce your wind knots drastically. Most spinning reels will automatically close the bail for you when you turn the handle, but sometimes this causes the line to miss the spool on that initial rotation, leaving a loose loop, which will become a wind knot on the next cast. By closing the bail by hand, it assures the line has been gathered completely by the bail and is being laid onto the spool properly.

Stretch your line - take your rod out in the backyard and make a long cast and peel off some additional line. Tie line to something sturdy and stretch your line. This will make the floro more limp and easier to manage

Just the nature of the beast with spinning reels. I've gone all braid too.

Another convert to braid on spinning, with an appropriate fluoro leader. Have always used the uni2uni knot since I'm too hamfisted to tie the FG knot well, but am going to try the Shin Fukae knot which looks promising -easier and quicker to tie than the FG knot but similar narrow size.
