Centrifugal vs. Magnetic Braking? - 01/04/18 11:16 PM
My Abu and Shimano low-profile baitcasters have centrifugal braking. It took me about two years to achieve a workable brake setting, but I've got it figured out. I've never used a reel with magnetic braking. How many of you prefer magnetic over centrifugal? IslandJim

So I have a couple of older Chronarchs and Curados. Always loved the the braking on them. But I also have a Revo Premier (older series) and an older Daiwa Z --- both of those have magnetic braking (and both do it differently). I really like those as well.
I can tell you that when I am fishing in the wind I do use the mag system as a crutch.
They have combo systems out there too but those always had a muted feel to me.

I have a couple of magnetic reels, but not not prefer them, unless the wind is HOWLING!!!!!!! I adjust my centri. reels so they have maximum casting distance, but I can tighten the drag down if the wind is blowing. The OLDER magnetic reels did not have the scale that the centri. reels did. I do not know about the newer ones and the ones with dual controls, either. I have heard the newer ones with the dual selectors are a PAIN to get adjusted, but once you get them adjusted, they are a breeze, but what do I know, since I do not have any, but fishermen that I trust say that. Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

I still prefer the centrifugal brake reels over the magnetic ones. Been using them all my life. I guess you learn to train your thumb. I rarely change the settings even when changing to a heavy or lighter lure. The only reel that has taken a while to adjust is made by Quantum. Just don’t like them!

They both have their ups and down depending on fishing style. I can use both, and as long as its a quality braking system, its very tuneable.

I have both but prefer the magnetic because it is easier to adjust, actually I really just set and forget them. The centrifugal is nice once you get them set as long as you dont change weights very much.
