Motorguide x3 Steering Problems

Motorguide x3 Steering Problems - 02/28/17 10:12 PM

I am having nothing but disappointment using my trolling motor. It is foot operated but it never goes the direction I want. The stupid arrow is always off. I can slide or press the arrow around to the proper position, but next time I press all the way down or all the way up on the foot pedal it is off again. Lots of times the stupid thing goes backwards, or to wrong side I want to go. I am sure this is just me as I never see anyone post any problems with theirs. Any help appreciated.

Generally you can take the top cover off. Put the arrow where it belongs and carefully put it back. If it is like many MG tmotors it has slipped the gear placement.

I had the same problem with an older motorguide. I took the top cap off to inspect the arrow, and sure enough, it was stripped out of its cog, as mentioned in the previous post. I put a very small drop of super glue on the plastic gear on the arrow piece and carefully replaced it while making sure it was lined up properly. Worked great for me. Hope this helps.

Thanks Dayne and texan12. Welcome to the forum texan12. I took off the head piece and the plastic gears did not seem broken, so I reset the arrow to match the point of the lower unit. Then I reinstalled the head. I raised it up and pressed the foot pedal and the arrow seems to be following the lower unit fine. I raised the shaft about 5 inches and tightened the big holder knob. Keeping my fingers crossed it will be okay next time I take the boat out on the water. Thanks again for you all's help.

Well thanks again guys. It worked much better today. I think what happened before I was straightening out the head unit so it faced forward, instead of leaving it alone and just going by the arrow for boat direction.
