Helix 7 Install-Got to drill big hole in console! - 06/21/16 03:28 PM

OK guys, I'm wanting to install my new Bird Helix 7 in my Tracker Pro 170 and a handyman I ain't. One of the things required, is to drill a 1 inch hole through the plastic console for routing the power and transducer wires. So here's the question: what type of drill bit should be used to cut a nice smooth hole through 3/8 inch plastic, hole-saw bit, standard bit, etc.? Thanks, I need to get this right the first time.

Unibit.expensive but makes a nice clean hole. If you have a Fastenal or Harbor Frieght a lot cheaper seeing your not cutting through metal, just drill slow.

Where on the console will you be putting the Helix 7?

I have a Tracker PT 170 TX

I have done this:

Now setup with the ONIX 10 on the console, a 1198 beside the console and the Helix 12 at the bow. Have not taken a picture of that yet.

I am using a Ram mount and putting the Helix 7 in the spot where the OEM Lowrance Elite 3X now sits. The Elite 3X is going up front.......for now. I am cutting a plate to cover the hole where the Lowrance unit now sits, and the Ram mount will attach to the plate. In looking at your setup, I may now mount my unit a little back where yours is, and route the wires through the existing hole under the Lowrance unit. Thanks for showing your setup, helps a lot.

Closer, thanks for the advice on the unibit. I live in a real small town, but we do have a Fastenal store. I'll check it out.

There is a cable management base that goes under a RAM ball mount to route the cables through. That is what I have on the dash.

Use that and the RAM over the hole that you already have.
