HB 597 at bow is dead - options...? - 06/07/15 08:00 PM

Summary/quick version:
Will the PiranhaMax series use the same transducer as my 597 did? I saw that it uses an XNT 9 28 T, and I think my 597 uses an XNT 9 20 T. Looks like the frequencies and beam angles are different. Is that going to make the Piranhamax incompatible with the XNT 9 20 T?

Are there any other cheap options you guys might suggest for either being plug & play with the equipment I have or being cheap enough to start from scratch with for just 2D sonar up front?

More details:
HB 597 at the bow has died. I have an HDS-5 flush mounted in the console and an HDS-7 at the console on a RAM mount that I can flip around when I'm fishing on the front deck. But I still like having depth at the trolling motor, which was all I really used the 597 for. So I was thinking I could buy a cheap 500 series unit on ebay (head unit only) but I just searched and was shocked at what those idiots are paying for stuff. I got my 597 on closeout in October of 2010 for $300, and I just saw a bid for an open box 597 for $385 on ebay. That unit has been discontinued for 5 years!

I still need to diagnose mine to see if it's the unit or transducer. But assuming the transducer isn't the issue, I'm in the market for a new unit.

Anyway, I assumed pretty much any 500 series unit would be plug & play with my standard 2D trolling motor transducer, standard power cable and 500 series mounting bracket. But after seeing the ebay costs, I started looking for a cheaper unit and that's how I came up with the Piranhamax 197.

Transducer do fail, so do power circuit fuses. Additionally the connection of the pins in the plugs in the cable collector can get misaligned with the display receptacles.

There are dual beam sonar 500 series, single beam sonar 500 series, Down Imaging 500 series and Side Imaging 500 series. They do not all use the same transducer. The DI version cannot use the 2D transdcuer you have.
The proper trolling motor transducer is the puck XTM 9 20 T.

The XNT 9 28 T is tuned to 200/455 kHz. Your 597 2D unit has 83/200
kHz. The PiranhaMax 197 is a 200/455 kHz unit.

Thanks Wayne. I probably should've offered a better explanation. I can navigate the 597 fine. It goes from view to view and will acquire satellite, but shows absolutely nothing on the sonar screen. It's just blank white. And the transducer is not making the ticking noise that I think it's supposed to when it's working. I checked the transducer cable, and there are no nicks/scratches/cuts.

Does anyone in the Rockwall or Greenville area have a 500 series unit I could use to test mine on? And do yall know if there is any fuse internal to the 597 that would cause this?

I understand about the different frequencies. I just wasn't sure if the piranha max wuold operate at 83/200 if it was connected to an 83/200 transducer or not. And as for swapping out any 500-series unit, I just assumed that I'd be buying a 2D-only due to cost and that any 2D-only would be a direct swap (maybe a poor assumption?).

Anyone in Rockwall or Greenville area have a 500 series unit? I would just like to plug mine into your power and transducer cables to see if my issue is a bad transducer or a bad head unit.

Figured out transducer was the problem. $80 later for a 2D-only transducer, I'm back up and running. Thought about buying an HDS replacement, but it was just more than the budget could handle right now.
