Linking HDS-8 gen 2 to HDS-7 gen 2 Touch

I linked my HDS-8 gen 2 at the console to my HDS-7 gen 2 Touch at the bow via a Ethernet cable thru my structure scan box. The 8 has the navionics map card. All my waypoints show up at the bow now but when I choose navionics instead of Lowrance maps I loose all depth/contours. Anyone have any idea why this happening?

Are all graphs updated to the latest sw?

what software version is on the HDS 8? asking becuase they made Navionics ( map sharing ) available in the v2.1 update - I believe.

Were you able to resolve this by doing the software update on the units?

It does need to be updated I think, not sure if I will since I’ve read that some of the updates mess up other areas of the graph. Only update I found was the 4.0 and I haven’t heard good things about it. May not worry about it since the front graph isn’t used for navigation, really just wanted to see the waypoints while fishing and they all transferred when I hooked up the Ethernet. Both graphs need to have a sw of 2.0 or higher. The Lowrance HDS Gen 2 2.0 update is the one that enables chart sharing via ethernet. Here is the release that describes chart sharing.

Here, take your pick. I took my graphs back to 2.1 (I had it saved to a sd card already) because the newer updates had my graphs all kinds of screwed up. Save this link, but yes 4.0 should solve your issue unless your issue is a bad Ethernet cable.

Thanks for the link. I’m sure it’s not the Ethernet cable it’s new. I downloaded the 4.0 update last night so I’m going to try to load it this evening.

Downloaded the update to a 2GB SD card on a Mac computer says it converted to upd file but doesn’t start the update when I put it in the unit. Shows up on the card, anyone have any ideas?

Usually you have to unzip the file for Lowrance updates before loading it to an sd card

How do you unzip the file? While downloading it showed as a zip file but when finished it showed as a upd file so I figured it did that on its own. I’m not real good w/computers especially a Mac but that’s all my wife and kids have.

Might be a little bit different way to install the update with the Mac, see if you did it like this.

That may work if I can figure out what a Sims folder is

When you download the update onto the card it should show 3 different things attached to the card, one will be a sims file.

To the best of my knowledge, Sims folder holds the files Lowrance uses for simulation when using that mode.

They are all unzipped

I thought about this all day and didn’t have phone service to correct my post above. The sims part is on the computer, when you open the file that the update made. I said it was on the card, that’s wrong. Copy it from the computer.


I’m even worse with computers than you are. Delete what you have on the card and re-format the card or try another card.

Tried it again still didn’t start the download. If I go to files on the unit and check the card it shows all the files that show up on the computer, I guess I could tell it to copy to files but it might mess up the whole thing. I contacted Lowrance but haven’t heard back from them.

Turn on your graph and go to the “about” menu, what application does it say (take a screenshot and post if you want)? Might be wasting time with the update thing.

The application on it is 1. something so it hasn’t ever been updated. Maybe lowrance will call me back or I’ll try to find someone with a regular computer or just leave it as is.

The 4.0 update file is named HDS_Gen2-4.0-45.2.200-Standard-1.upd The file on your card has a .meta extension added. I don't believe that the MAC unzipped it to the SD card properly. Here is a link to an unzipped 4.0 file. Try copying it to the SD card and see if your unit will update with it.

Thanks for helping Mak, we don’t have a home computer anymore and all my updates on sd cards are for Touch models.

Thanks for the link I will try it today when I get home. All this computer stuff is confusing. Under downloads on the Mac it shows it as a zip file then when you click on it it does a process and changes to upd just can’t figure out what to do after that. Hopefully this will get it done, thanks again.

Yes they are sharing the navionics card, but I’ve lost my water temp reading. I’ll have to mess with it tomorrow didn’t have time to try and figure it out.
