Need help with positioning my electronics - 11/26/17 06:18 PM

Hey All:

I have a quick question for you guys. I am moving to Texas this next year and have a 18 foot bass boat that I am switching out the electronics on (fishfinders).

I just got a Garmin Striker 7cv and will be getting a Garmin Striker 4 also. I want to put one of them on the front of the boat near the trolling motor and one at the steering wheel.

My question is: Should I put the 7 inch screen at the trolling motor or near the steering wheel?

I will be doing both bass fishing and trying to get my kids on some crappie or catfish to get them hooked on fishing. If you answer please let me know why you would do it that way so that I can make a good decision on how to position the electronics.

Thanks in advance,
Kyle

Most of the guys I know have the largest one at the helm and the smaller one at the bow. That doesn't make any sense to me. When I am driving the boat I am a lot closer to the screen than when I am at the front of the boat either standing or sitting fishing. It only makes sense to me to have the largest one where I am conducting business and spending the majority of the time. In a day of fishing I won't be behind the wheel more than 30 minutes but will be at the bow for hours on end. I want the big one with me not behind me so the guest sees the best.

I use my fish finders to search for fish and structure and when I am searching, I am primarily sitting behind the wheel. On a SI, the larger the screen the more detail you see. Once I have located my spot, I rely on the fish finder much less and can get by with the smaller up front. I think most put the big at the console and the smaller on the bow

I'd like to add that if you are a bank beater, it doesn't matter what you put where. I do a bunch of vertical fishing and use down scan and 2 d sonar at the same time so the bigger screen is a must for me.

I have a helix 12 with all the bells and whistles at the steering wheel and just put a base model helix 7 2d sonar up with Terrova to slab for white bass and hybrids under once fish are located on the helix 12 and spot locked over. The reason for this is that I cover lots of water searching for white bass and utilize multiple technologies on one screen to locate them but utilize very simple 2d sonar under the TM once spot locked on the school of fish. Sometimes I can get by with slabbing under the rear transom sonar but if the school is small enough, I may mark them on sonar and tell my terrova to "go to" and spot lock on the school and the back of my boat 24 feet away is simply too far away to catch the school.

Its a good argument that you may use your TM mounted sonar more than the helm sonar and would want it bigger, but I think the one with the bells and whistles for the majority of anglers would be at the steering wheel which is why the larger screen is more beneficial so more technologies can be seen at one time on a larger screen. The reason I can get by with a smaller unit on the front is because I'm only utilizing one technology on it (2d sonar) and not trying to locate fish but more see their reaction to my presentation and if they are still there.

Hope that gives some rational and things to think about! What would be awesome is to just buy 12 inch unit with bells and whistles for helm and 12inch base model for front but that would cost a bunch!

Whats nice about them is that with the Helix units, you only need on SI unit and then can get the SI screen on all the linked Helix units even if they are only 2d.
