I am thinking of getting another 8 wt rod as I plan on doing more coastal fishing. I have a TFO Chronicles that would become my backup so I have it narrowed down to two choices, the TFO BVK or Sage Motive. The cost difference is a decent reel but since I have a TFO, that has already broken, maybe it's time to step up a little. If Backwoods has both rods would they let me try them before deciding?

I have the TFO 8 weight BVK. I guess it's alright, certainly usable. It's not a rod that I love. It's not a rod that I pick up and almost instantly say "wow, what a great rod". But you may pick it up and totally love it. Lots of people do. It doesn't have a reputation for being durable.

I'm sort of where I figure any rod can be cast and I can tinker with different lines to optimize the rod, but some rods for me are just more enjoyable to cast and fish. The BVK just lacks something, a crispness, something on the recovery I don't like. I don't think it swings very light although it's a light rod. But it will cast a long way even though I think that's an overrated attribute for the Texas inshore scene.

I've never cast a Sage Motive. I think they ought to let you cast both or else why buy from a brick and mortar store? If a store just has racks of rods without any chance to cast them or any other enhanced service then you might as well pick it up off the internet.

I too have a 8 wgt BVK. I like the rod but have not fished it much. It does swing a little heavy for its light weight but it can certainly sling a large fly a long way. My Orvis H2 8 wgt tip flex is my fav. Not as fast as the BVK but much lighter swing and easier to cast.I've never cast a sage rod. Fishing tackle unlimited has both brands and will let you try 'em out.

sorry, didn't notice right off you are up north, a houston store might be a little off the track for you.

I'm pretty sure backwoods will let you try before you buy. Tailwaters in Dallas will do the same, but I don't think they have a Motive in stock. I would also recommend looking for a Sage Xi3. They are discontinued, but new ones can still be found on ebay for sub $400. I have an 8wt xi3 that you can try if interested. I'm in south Arlington.

I agree I have same impression. It is a decent rod and I can cast it 80-90' but it seems like it's a little heavy. I will see if Backwoods can help me out.

Thanks for offer and if I hadn't moved out of Arlington I would take you up on it. I have a feeling I will like the Sage much better

Formula you know I will preach TFO any day but the bvk falls short. I have seen first hand it's downside a few times now.
