Lake Livingston Dam

Anyone ever fished the Trinity below lake Livingston? My dad wants to fish out there and I was wondering if it's possible to fly fish?

Yes, there's a public boat ramp at the 3278 bridge on the east side. You can walk the bank south. It can get crowded if there's any flow. I only go during the winter and early spring.

If you don't mind wading a little there is plenty of room. I never use anything else there.

Where would you wade? And what do you typically fish for?

There's a sand bar down the bank south of the parking lot. It depends on how much water is being released as to how much of the sand bar is exposed. Checkout Google Maps to give you an idea.
Striped/White bass mainly if you are using a fly. Chartreuse/White clouser is my go to fly.

I'm generally after white bass there. I usually beach my kayak just above the service spillway channel on the west bank and wade out about thigh deep, throwing small streamers with the 2 weight or the half weight. I catch them literally at my feet. I haven't gone up there the last couple of years, so I can't offer any current info.

I have also anchored the yak and fished the channel with heavy Clousers up at the upstream access limit, as well as wading the rock shoals there. Sometimes it was good. Sometimes it wasn't.

I helped TPWD collect stripers there one day as brood fish for their striper stocking program. They had the good fortune to be connected to the local water authority, so they could have them jack up the flows to stimulate more fish to move toward the dam. We were out in a big shocker boat with electric probes in front and guys with landing nets ready to scoop up any likely looking brooders. It was fast-paced, exciting and messy. It was amazing the number and size of fish it scared up, including some sizeable alligator gar. Quite a memorable experience!

Yep. A friend accidentally foul hooked a paddlefish while striper fishing up there, and I have had some gigantic alligator gar surface right at my kayak. There are some huge catfish up there too. Although catfishing isn't my cup of tea, I see an awful lot of them caught there. It's a great fishery, but the dopers and the trash dumpers detract a lot from the experience. One trip there I found where a "sportsman" had taken a dump in the middle of the trail to the water next to the ramp; he/she just left the load and the paper lying in the middle of the trail. Sorta ruined the ambiance........
