DFW area locations?

DFW area locations? - 06/06/17 05:34 AM

I'm normally a traditional bass fisherman and it's been a challenge to get my 13yo son interested. But we went fly fishing in Colorado last week and he loved it. He wants a fly rod, waders, etc. So I have googled around and it seems much of the fly fishing is promoted around the Austin and hill-country part of Texas. We live in Fort Worth. Any suggestions closer to DFW? The challenge is that I would like to find somewhere we can get bites to keep him interested. I know I can put him on my boat at the local Eagle Mtn lake and hand him a fly rod, but I don't see us getting bites that way. Any suggestions?

Target bluegill. Trout gear, rod, line, even the flies works great for them. You'll find them in most of the neighborhood ponds in the city and you can fish for them from your boat on larger lakes. They will hit both topwater and sinking flies.

Chasing Bluegill is a great way to learn to use a fly rod. Then it is easier to transition to fishing for bass on a fly.

Yes, what Rex suggested. I grew up catching bluegill on popping bugs and it hooked me on fly fishing for life. Sinking flies, such as a bream killer, also work well but nothing beats the excitement of them hitting a popping bug on the surface. Plus a big ol' Bass is known to lurk about as well! Fly fishing from the boat is a great way to experience it. He might even evolve to fishing from a kayak. Very popular with the young crowd now.

most city ponds have sunfish. I take my daughter to the closest one and pinch down the barb and go at it.

I would start with city parks and state parks. They offer easy access for fishing.

The Paluxy River is a great place to fish. We went a couple of weeks ago and I got about 30 fish in 2 afternoons. Most were blue gills about the size of my hand and even a 3lb bass. All were caught on a black body brown foam Llano bug. I just about had to retire that fly after the trip.

I want to go to the Paluxy on Monday stay the night and fish the river. Any recommendations as to where to stay on the river and or where to enter the river. I have never been there before.

I have only fished at the state park. Even with the crowds the fishing has been good. I'll mark up a map of the park and send it to you later this afternoon.

I quit fishing the Paluxy after I left Tarleton years ago, but I used to fish Big Rocks pretty frequently. But head this warning: If you go, on a nice day, on the weekend, you'll have crowds and crowds of people looking at you like you just escaped the lunatic asylum and it will be frustrating. I learned that pretty quickly and decided Big Rocks was exclusively for weekdays. I also avoided it during, before, or after holidays.

Come join us Saturday on the Trinity River- the Ft Worth Fly Fishers offers these fly fish 101 for free, and this will be a perfect starting point for learning local spots.
