Back from Belize. - 03/03/17 03:10 PM
Just got back yesterday, and all I can say is, Belize is awesome. We did one day with the guide and the rest of the week I went DIY. I caught every fish I wanted besides a permit. Day one I managed to hook the first bonefish I casted at in a big tailing school. We spent the next few hours doing nothing but spooking them off, it was so glass calm that they would take off before the line even hit the water.
The next fish I landed was about a 3 1/2' barracuda. A local guy was standing by the water and pointed him out to us when we walked by. Somehow, with a lot of luck, I managed to get him to eat a small bonefish fly and to not bite through my 12lb tippet. I don't think I've ever had a fish take off that fast in my life, he was about 100 yards into my backing in about 3 seconds. Definitely a highlight of the trip.
By the end of day one I had landed 3 of the 4 fish I really wanted to catch. Bonefish, barracuda and tarpon. We found tons of small tarpon in the lagoons, and by small I mean really small, like 12-15" long.
The rest of the week I caught a ton of bonefish, and one massive jack on my 7wt. The final day between two of us we caught 13 bonefish, one double up, and I ended the trip with my biggest bonefish of the trip. When you read that Belize has nothing but small bones, it's a lie. We caught some really nice fish. Most of them were well over 20".
Belize was amazing and I'll definitley be making this a yearly trip
