Below the Dam at Texoma September 15, 2016 - 09/16/16 04:54 PM

Fished below the dam at Texoma yesterday. They were running only one generator and that creates an advantage for the Texas side and especially for fly fishing. The fish were only 40 feet or so from the bank. I am guessing but I think that these fish were 3 to 3 1/2 lbs. I caught and released 12 total and some could have been bigger but not by much. Water quality is improving but still not where it should be. It will only get better. Fish were very healthy and in good condition. Fly of choice was a small white bait fish. It can be seen in the photos. No weight on the fly.
If you are just learning how to fly fish, this is a great opportunity to have some success as the fish are (were)in easy casting distance from the bank. Great fighting fish for anyone to catch!!!!

Please just remember that is a very rare place if your toes are in the water on the Texas side you need an Oklahoma license. As the power company controls the water on both sides for a short way down. So if you want to wait out you absolutely must have a Oklahoma license

Good report Vance.

I got back in town last week and headed up to the Red on Saturday. I can't believe the change in the bottom from the last time they had the flood gates open. Over the 20 something years I've been fishing the tailrace, the bottom has changed very little. Now, holes I've fished forever are completely filled in with rip rap. This old dog is gonna have to learn some new tricks.

I managed to catch four like the ones in your pictures and a handful of dinks. I fished before generation and the water was murky and a bit stinky. Fishing should only get better over the next two months.

See ya up there!

Man, I guess I'm doing something wrong. I went up there a couple weekends ago (my folks live in Denison) and I fished for hours with not even a bite. I went over to OK side and did hook into a Gar but lost him pulling him to shallower water. I'm a novice fly fishermen, so I'd like to know what your setup looks like. I was using a 9' cabelas three forks 6wt rod with 6wt floating line. I'm also using similar flies to what I see in your picture. Do I need sinking line? Is there a curtain way I need to present the fly to the fish? I was raised on that river and Lake Texoma, but mostly lure and bottom fishing. Fly fishing is a new thing. Any help would be great.

bcorbett.....you are not doing anything wrong.....we have all had days when we don't get a bite. I think that the main key is to give yourself plenty of opportunities to catch fish. Your set up is exactly what you need. The best opportunities for fly fishing is when they are generating with one generator and that usually favors the Texas side. The current is such that the fish are closer to the bank on the Texas side and can be reached with a fly rod. However, there are no sure things, as you know. For a fly fisherman, the area from the last steps upstream to the steps are a good bet during generation time. If the fish are there so will be the fishermen. Easy fish always draws a big crowd. Sometimes there are too many to fly fish. I am not sure if the type of fly matters so much because the stripers are such aggressive feeders. I would check the web site to see how many generators will be running and also call the recording to get some times and additional information the number is 903 465 1491. Also, as you can see there are many fly fishermen on this thread and this forum that have a wealth of information on this tailrace. If you research the post from the gentleman just above your post they will tell you just about everything you need to know about this fishery......"didja getny" just research this form for his post.

Hope to see you in the area some time!!
