White River Arkansas Question

Howdy, question about Brown Trout Fishing the White River in Arkansas. I have to be in Little Rock Oct 14th to 17th. One question is if that time of year on the White is any good for fishing? Second question, where to go and whom to hire as a guide? Know NOTHING about Arkansas, never been, need help, THANKS!!!!

You might want to consider The Little Red River. The Brown Trout should be in full swing. Plus it's closer.

The White is subject to the whims of generation there, and that generation depends on the weather (typically). Late fall and late winter are highly rated. The fish are pretty well educated too. The pix I see of the largest browns - are those caught at night. Real meat eaters!

The Little Red at Heber Springs - about an hour and a half north from Little Rock - as above spawn should be on - as above - night is a good bet for Brownies - articulated mouse patterns - there is easy access walk in - there are docks to a rent a boat if so inclined or you can fish from them if do not want to wade - bows should be good during the day - Jamie Rouse @ Rouse Fishing if you want a guide, a great guide or any of his other guides. Lobo Landing is pretty nice digs, or the Holiday Inn Express.

If you fish at night from shore - articulated mouse - cast as far as you can and strip it back. Daytime - talk to guys at the fly shop, or Jamie Rouse - most likely midges for the bows.

It's a good time to be up there for any of the 3 tailwaters(White, Norfork, Little Red). Spawn usually doesn't get going until mid November, but they could be starting to get worked up. If they're generating, it's streamer fever.

Definitely worth hiring a guide, Rouse is the man. Best and coolest guide I've ever used.

With those 3 rivers it's all about the generation schedule.

What everyone else said. Browns are just starting to get worked up on that system. Streamers all day and night during higher water. Mice during low water. Night fishing is best for the trophies. Rainbows available all day, any day. Good luck

I'd give Nathaneal Ferguson a call http://www.fergusonflyfishing.com/ and have him take you to the catch and release area on the Norfork tailwater. Lots of pigs there year round, browns, bows, and cutties. Probably a little early for the brown trout spawn, but you never know.

in june i fished with Brock from http://www.northarkansastroutfitters.com/. we through hoppers and did really well we also had some huge fish move on our streamers. Some of the other guys landed some nice fish on streamers.

The Little Red at Heber Springs is quite a bit closer and has several good access points. I caught a brown there about like Orvis Houston Ben's last year on a sowbug. It is sowbug country. If I were to fish the Norfork/White (approximately same distance) I would use a guide if I could possibly afford to. If they're generating, no problem. You'll just float it. Plus you won't waste your whole time trying to figure out what to do. You will almost certainly catch fish like OHB's. Also, the Norfork just below the dam IS great, just as the poster above said.

Scuds, sow bugs, sculpin, and San Juan worms are about all you will need. Fall is when the big Browns show up.

this^ Although I do have to add you have to get out at night and at least to give it a shot. Just scout the area you are going to fish during the daylight first.try and take a mental picture of what you're going to be fishing when you come back after dark. 12-5AM is about your best shot at a giant with 2 o'clock being peek and absolutely no moon or cloud cover being preferable. The dark can be very rewarding.
