Brazos Below Whitney

Lake Whitney is down to just about 18" above pool. Water release is down to just under 5,000 CFS.

I'm betting the river will be wading depth this weekend.

I went over it Sat to laumch at Uncle Gus and it came a monsoon. The river was going pretty good. waiting to get into it also. Caught alot in the main lake but im sure the river will be loaded w striper

It is below Granbury. Was running only 400 cfs last week and was perfect. Lots of stripers. Then the bra shut the water down to 2 cfs. The next day there a hundred or more 24 inch stripers dead in the river. I guess the low flow cut back the oxygen. Smaller ones seemed ok.

I'm watching the flows very closely as well. The anticipation of getting on that river is almost too much! With so much water being released from the dam for so long, I wonder what happens to all the fish. Logically, I would think that they'd all be swept downstream leaving no fish once the flows have stopped. I can't imagine they can feed in such conditions or do much of anything else fishy. Yet I know they'll be there once things settle down. Anybody have any illuminating thoughts on the matter?

I've thought about that a lot over the past several decades. The fish are always there in abundant numbers when the river recedes, no matter how long or how high it was up.

The fish go up into the creeks and come back out as the water drops. They also find an abundance of slower water on the inside of the bends in the river where the water is close to the bank - where there are places that the water almost comes to a stop, and a few places where it eddies. Those creeks and inside bends are good places to fish when the water river is up, if you can get to any of them, and I have usually been able to.

All I know is that when it goes down after a long spell like this, the fishing is tremendous. I'm sure they'll be just as relieved as we are to see it slow down, lay low, and clear up.
