Texas Coast - Where would you go?

I could use a little help picking a fishing area. I live in Fort Worth and I have an old 15 foot boston whaler sport that gets pretty shallow. Not a true flats boat but she gets the job done. I fly fish for the most part and I'm looking to zip down to the coast, do a days fishing for reds mostly and get right back. My question is where would you go if you were me? My choices are from Galveston down to the Port Aransas area. I really have never fished for reds on the Texas coast but plenty in LA and Florida. I put a premium on being able to sight fish. Areas with endless flats are what I have in mind but I'm very much open to suggestion. So, where do you think I should go in the next month? Thanks for the help!

Those old whalers just can't be beat. I still have one of the very first Mako's ever made and its still going strong....and not many (if any) boats made today will do that, certainly today's Makos.

The farther south you go, the more likely you are to find clearer water. Tight lines!

Like Meadowlark said, the souther you go, the clearer the water (I know, but it sounded like a cool word). My favorite spots are Matagorda and Rockport, but the entire Texas coast offers great redfishing. Up the coast where the water is murkier, you can get closer to the fish. Down the coast where the water is clearer, you can see the bottom better, and see the fish in deeper water better, but it can be harder to get close. Generally, the upper coast has more soft (as in too soft to wade) bottom, and the lower coast has more firm bottom that is suitable to wade. In Matagorda the water is usually pretty stained; in Rockport it is considerably less stained. In Aransas Pass and on down into the Laguna, it is mostly very clear, shallow, and well vegetated. But it's all good. Take some five to eight weight rods to cover all of the wind possibilities, and have a ball. Good luck!
