State Private Water Body Fly Fishing Record

In the spring while bass fishing a couple of local ponds I caught a huge green sunfish off a spro baby popper frog. Then in May I took up fly fishing and started to catch more of these 10 inch plus sunfish off top water poppers. I looked up the state record for private water body on the fly and it was 9.5 inch, 0.72 lb. In August I caught one over 10", but it only weighed .65 lbs. So the fall came and they started to fatten up a bit. Finally, on December 4th I caught one that was 10.25 inches and .80 lbs. I submitted the application to the TPWD. It was caught off a black wooley bugger in a small pond. It will be posted on the TPWD website when it is updated in early January 2015.

In my opinion, greenies are the reason one weight rods were invented.

Awesome! Green Sunfish are one of my favorites - especially on a popper. They strike a popper with such violence for their size! If they grew to a few pounds they would be dangerous.

Thanks guys, I agree with the lightweight setup and the aggressiveness of the green sunfish. I only have 2 8 weight setups and a 5 weight currently. I was thinking about getting a 3 weight for this. But the good thing is that the green sunfish has a huge mouth and I catch most of the big ones while I'm fishing with big flies for bass. I couldn't believe it when I caught several 8 1/2" green sunfish on a spro baby popper frog. So smaller bass flies aren't a problem for a 9" greenie.

Congrats-fish like this are the reason I bought a 3wt, whole lotta fun compared to the 5wt

Come down to my golf course before it closes..... the Greenies there go up to 12" and 1.25 lb.

Yes Jeff, I recognize it is a record that's easily broken, even by myself. I caught one over a pound in the spring out of a bigger pond on conventional tackle. But I figured it would be something fun to share with my grandchildren some day. I was reluctant to post it here. But I was encouraged to do so as in the big picture of things it might help TPWD to get more people involved in this program.

Thanks Moon, I suspect you already have caught a few records. That small mouth was sure impressive.
