Barracuda from the Beach! - 09/14/15 08:14 PM
Well, I made my first trip to Florida a few weeks ago. It has always sounded like the promised land on all the forums and it just sounded like shooting fish in a barrel. Well, you know, you don't hear reports from all the people that went and didn't do any good. It was very close to a skunk. Word was that in the summer a lot of the fish move further out to deeper water. I was kayak fishing and fishing for shark from the beach. It was a family affair, so there were also a number of non-fishing activities as well. Spent the first day with lines in the water to no avail. Later I took my dad out for his first serious offshore kayak fishing expedition. Also to no avail. Hit the beach before sun up the last day hoping to see at least one Florida shark. Not much going on until later in the morning I got a taker on my big shark line. I had it out about 500 yds. just shore side of the blue water line. My hopes were for a shark, but it turned out to be a barracuda. I caught him on a whole bonito about half his size. He apparently had a big appetite. It was my first barracuda, so it was a nice catch, but I would trade it in for a big hammer in a second. I guess that is a good reason to make another trip right?
