North Texas lakes on windy days?

New to the forum, been living in north DFW about a year. I've been trying to learn the lakes, one thing seems consistent, apart from some sheltered coves, every lake I've fished gets a little nasty with winds above 10-15mph. Any lakes around that stay relatively calm with normal winds that we see here? I have an xpress h56, (18ft aluminum) it does pretty well in rough water, but I'd like to find water that is enjoyable to be on when there is some wind. I was thinking about checking out the brazos river lakes, but I'm not too sure what to expect? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm open to lakes within about a 2hr drive from DFW. Thanks

Use this link to do as much research as you want. It will list the lakes, their water levels, stocking history and even access points. It will also show how well the fishing is for a given type of fish. You'll see the size of the lake and the layout. You can pick lakes or areas that run at an angle that allows you to escape or minimize the wind.

Forgot to add 95% of the time I fish for black bass. I'll fish for whatever might be biting the rest of the time. Thanks

Bridgeport is not bad on windy days. You can launch at the Park and stay out of the main section. The main section can get pretty rough with the right S/SE wind. I have left three footers in the main lake and headed West up the river and it is easy going. PK can get a good chop in a lot of it, and Broadway can get bad but there are numerous ramps in places that you can launch and stay out of trouble. Neither of these will get like Twok does.

Great, thanks! I'm starting to realize that I was spoiled on the natural lakes in the Midwest. I never had to worry too much about really rough water, or stumps for that matter. But I'd trade those inconveniences every time for the fishing down here. It's a bit of a learning curve for me, but I'm enjoying it every time I go out. Never realized how warm Lakes down here get until this past summer. I appreciate the advice, lord knows I need it.

There are some areas on Ray Roberts that you can fish and stay out of most of the wind. You just need to use the ramps near by. South wind you can use Pond Creek. North wind Isle du Bois works.

Wind is just a fact of life here. You'll adjust

Lake Grapevine is a good one to fish when the winds get up, a North or South wind are both very doable even when blowing 20+, the only time it really gets big is when you have a big SE or NW wind but still very manageable if you know how to drive a boat and just take your time.

A little wind is always better than wake board boats and lake fleas running around all crazy and not paying attention to where they are going. I've had 2 near misses this year while anchored, both on GV.

One thing I learned after I retired and started fishing Texas lakes in a small boat was how important it was to go to weather underground and see the wind forecast hour by hour. A simple net forecast might say winds 15 MPH, but neglect to say that is an average and that wind will be 22 MPH at 2 PM with gusts to 35.

When I used to fish Texoma allot I'd be whistling " wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" as I loaded the boat. My wife asked me why and I told her I was going to the ocean. She only went with me once. Wind forecast was 10 mph from the north but She made me turn around before I even got out of the cove at Eisenhower. Just nice 3 foot rollers, nothing to be concerned about. When the wind is from the north at Texoma the Texas side downlake can get rough. Been out there when it looked like a rough day on the Atlantic. That said, I was on Ray Roberts once with wind from the south and didn't think I would make it back to the launch. Any Texas lake facing south will get rough on windy days. I think Tawakoni is the champ.

I hear you Muzzlebreak. Had a wake boat swamp me this year in the no wake zone on PK. I was tied to a dock crappie fishing and could only watch in horror as the big waves came over the front of my boat.

Give Lake Athens a try. Great smaller lake for Bass and has plenty of coves you can hide in.
