Strange colored gar

Strange colored gar - 12/20/16 04:00 PM

I posted this over in rough fish as well.

I've been working as a freshwater fisheries biologist for almost 40 years and this is the ONLY gar fish like this I've ever heard of. Has anybody here seen anything like this?

This fish was caught in the Lower Brazos near Holiday Lakes. It is currently in the person's who caught it fish tank. I haven't inspected it in person yet, but I think it is either a young alligator gar or spotted gar. The colors have remained the same since the fish was caught a few weeks ago so I suspect they are not the result of exposure, stress or other physical cause. This fish is this color from genetics or a mutation. Very unusual. So anybody ever see something like this?

It's a Koi-gar ?
That's pretty cool. It may be worth a lot of $$$ to somebody.

My first thought too. Instead of eating a koi, one a them garfish made babies with it.

If you can get photos from various angles while it's in a tank, I would love to see them.

That's amazing! For sure a gem in someone's aquarium collection. Hopefully it goes somewhere to be in a live display.

Never seen one like it, Brett. But there were some orange largemouth posted on here awhile back that looked strikingly similar. I'll see if I can find the thread.

Here's an article on one that was caught in Florida.

Maybe eating the same shrimp or krill that give flamingoes their color.

I bet the color fades over time if put in an aquarium

Did you have to shoot it? I see the evidence.

Come to think of it I have seen a few of these bass as well as some green sunfish with a similar color scheme. But this is the only gar.

I'm trying to get it for my collection.

Yep, the dude had worked for me in the past. Anybody that has done that for any time at all, really, really likes fish. Plus they know when they got something special.

I'm still working on getting the fish, but part of the problem with other folks liking fish like I do is first, they want to keep it themselves, and second, they got a pretty good idea of how badly I want something like that.

That would make a nice donation to the TP&W Freshwater Fisheries Center.
