Options on blown motor

Options on blown motor - 07/14/16 11:47 PM

I live in Granbury. I have a 1994 20' procraft. It's all I need to fish Granbury and the local lakes. I really enjoy fishing Granbury and participate in the working man's tour in town as much as possible. I blew the motor several weeks ago during the tournament. This is actually my dad's boat and he has overhauled this motor 2 times already. We have determined that it is not worth overhauling again.

My dad would like to get the boat running again. I need some advice and thoughts on some options. Is it worth looking for a used motor? Where is the best place to look for used motor? Should I just give up on it and sale as is? If anyone has any good advice on this situation, please weigh in.

There are used motors for sale, wouldn't buy one without seeing the results of a diagnostics test. Have you priced a re-manufactured power head? If the rest of the motor is good, that could be a solution. Or, see about selling your's outright, and replacing the whole thing. I believe there was a 1996 Merc, in the Classified sections on this forum.

Thanks for input. We have overhauled this motor twice and I feel like a total new motor will be our route. I've never shopped a boat motor.

Find you a mechanic that can test one out before buying. Some mechanics have units that they have already rebuilt and have them for sale and will give you some sort of warranty. I know my mechanic in Arlington usually has one or two and his price seems to be about the same as a used motor on craigslist.

Do you know what's causing the motor to blow? Fix that first if you plan to get a new power head for the motor.

Thanks for the referral. Looks like he has a motor that will be best for my boat. I have heard from several people that this guy puts them back together great. Hopefully i'll be back on the lake soon!!

Dale helped me put a motor he rebuilt on my boat. We spent 3 hours on Monday switching it out. Would have been faster if I could have changed out some of the bolts faster. I took the boat out on Granbury Saturday and it ran like a champ. Great referral. Couldn't have been more pleased. Dale was awesome and I learned a ton about my new 225 Mercury. Thanks for the referral and special thanks to Dale for helping me live the dream again.
