I need some advice on a yamaha

I need some advice on a yamaha - 08/08/15 06:15 PM

Thinking of buying a boat that has a 2007 150 4 stroke yamaha. Anyone have any input on this particular motor. I had heard that at one time yamaha's had a problem with blowing heads but not sure if that was true. Motor looks clean and am going to do a compression test and a lake test. Thanks for any help.

I'm running a 150SHO but it's still new. Have a good mechanic check it out like you mentioned and that's about all you can do. I'm not an outboard mechanic but I did make my living turning wrenches on heavy equip and came to realize a long time ago that an engine is just a bunch of nuts, bolts and parts looking for a place and time to scatter, doesn't matter who made it. You get some good ones and bad ones, no matter the brand. Sorry,,, I got windy. Back to your question, I've had 3 Yamaha's and love em.

Have a friend that has a 2006 4 stroke. Just put it in the shop and had a crank shaft break in half for some reason. Other then that no other problems with it. I have a 2007 2 stroke 175 Yamaha and haven't had any problems at all. If it has good compression shouldn't have any problems with it!

Thanks everyone. Only 250 hrs on it but it has been seting for a few yrs and been started here and there. After all the test I will do a full work up on the motor and should be good.

The larger v Max HPDI had some issues but the smaller ones always seemed pretty solid. I hope to hell that my larger one keeps holding up.

ive had a 97 Yamaha 150 vmax carb motor, for 5 years and it has never been in the shop for motor issues. Had the lower rebuilt twice because of stumps. Before I total the boat.

Ive got an 99 Yamaha 225 OX66 now for a year and a half, and not a single issue with it.

Google mercury Optimax problems, evinrude etec problems, Yamaha vmax, sho, etc problems........ You will find a list of problems on each one. I have personally had Mercury, Evinrude and currently Yamaha outboards and can tell you that they are all good and they all have issues.

I have a 2007 Yamaha 250
Maintenance can be expensive, but worth it to keep things running right.
I've always maintained mine as recommended by the book and have never had a problem.

Compression test, leak down test, inspect the cylinders with flashlight, and take a test run. If all this checks out, not sure what else you can do.

I have a 2008 Yamaha 200hp 4 stroke and a 2010 Yamaha 90hp 2 stroke. My father has a Yamaha 150hp 2 stroke, and I think it is a 2004 model. Neither of us have had any problems at all with our outboards.
